What happens after 2,500 miles in a year

Bought the same exact Nike running shoes today that I did in late September 2010. Before I started my new job I ran 60 miles a week, now I only....run 40 with all the drive time in my new one. So basically I ran about 2,500 miles in this past year or what amounts to marathon training. Keep in mind you're supposed to replace running shoes after the tread wears down or seams start popping, the old shoes have both. Now I know these are shoes (yes disgusting) but I'm still fascinated by how much something can deteriorate in a year, observe:

I totally agree, usually they last 6 to 8 months tops. When I saw them on the shelf today down to $39.99 from $79.99 it was a no-brainer.

I thought it was every 4-500 miles change your shoes ?? I run on average 20-30 miles a week.

Yeah, I've heard several formulas over the past decade and a half. So long as I have arch support and the tread on the bottom isn't worn down I don't replace... If you look close you can see the sides have gotten bowed out on the old shoes which means they are pretty much junk at that point as they don't really give support. I say this knowing full well I've never suffered a leg injury or shown signs of joint deterioration unlike most runners. Then again, most runners don't keep up with weight lifting really well. My thought is that building up the muscles, especially in the calves and thighs prevents a lot of injuries to the joints.

I've heard this many times before too.
I thought I ran a decent amount at ~15 miles a week. Both you and TOMS1SS put my distance to shame.

After dealing with plantar facitius in both feet, a bone spur (a really bad one at that) and heel spurs on both feet I'm a firm believer in good shoes. There for a while I was up to 25-30 miles a week with an occasional 40 mile week. I've tried brooks, new balance, puma, asics, etc. I keep coming back to Nike, Nike air to be exact. I'm rockin the tailwinds right now. If the rest of the shoe breaks down and begins to fall apart or has alot of miles on it as long as the air pocket is not punctured it will still give you cushioning. I never would have thought that shoes made that much difference but I cant even look at a set of new balance without getting pains.

2500 miles is WAYYYY past the sell by date on those shoes. While they may have looked ok, they were not. You are asking for trouble at that distance on a pair of runners.

If ya' drive some hobnails inta' the soles an' heels you can get hella more mileage outa' 'em.
It's similar to studding the tires on your car (not your ever-lovin' Camaro, of course) will get ya' plenty longer tire life, though it runs rough-shod over our roads. This is definitely more of a rural solution, for the car, not the shoes.
