Well I guess nothing except for clogging up the full size car market within the same brand. Isn't that one of the reasons they leaned down after the come back. That's one too many full size cars if you compare the competition. Besides, why not drop the impala in favor for a full size RWD Caprice with an option for AWD Caprice? That seems like it would be more cost effective and overall be a good tactic.

There is much greater appeal in the mass market for front wheel drive than rwd. Plus, GM has already announced that the next generation Impala is going to be fwd and share a platform with the Buick LaCrosse, getting built along side the Malibu.

How could they sell both? Make one as a mass market, every day sedan, the Impala, to compete with cars like the Toyota Avalon. Then make an enthusiast oriented sport sedan to compete against cars like the Charger, that job would fall to the Caprice. Different cars to appeal to different buyers

Actually the 2014 Impala will be on Premium EpII. The XTS's platform.

Impala will compete with Taurus, Z2SC will compete with Charger.

There are subtle differences. XTS (or whatever GM decides to call it, I've been hearing ETS) is actually supposed to be a bit bigger than LaCrosse.

The naming scheme has pretty much gone to hell now.

We looked at one and drove it along with 2 other departments. The problem is the driver seat. Put your patrol belt on with a your gun, radio and other gear and forget it unless you are 145 pound 5-10 guy. The seat just sucks for any one bigger than that. So we are back to Ford. To bad we need 8 new cars this year.
