This really tops the list of one of the stupidest things I have ever done, I managed to hurt myself before we even left.

I really wanted to get everything loaded before Brandon got off work on Friday since I was off for the day. I was so close, the toyhauler was loaded, the only thing left was to put Davids Suzuki in the back of my truck so I could hitch up the toyhauler.

I really know better and don't know what I was thinking, obviously I wasn't, I have seen the guys load the quad up for me when ever I have to pick the bikes up from the shop, they make it look so easy. I thought I can do this, I put the ramps up to the truck. I kick started the bike on the first try which really stoked me. I zoomed over to the ramp and started driving up, the wheel starts to slide to the left, I give it some more gas and try to straighten it out, not being used to twist throttle gave it too much gas. Doing a wheelie, throwing me back and the bike lands on top of me on the ground upside down. No helmet on. I just really was not thinking. You don't have to tell me how stupid it was, I get sick everytime I think about it and how much worse it could have been.

My temple swelled up instantly from my head getting bounced into the handle bar and my hand from hitting the asphalt instantly swells. I went inside to call Brandon to see if he was close by to help right side up the quad but he wasn't so my son was able to help me. My sister gets to my house about 20 minutes later and makes me go to get it checked out. I went to urgent care, they looked at my pupils and said there wasn't any pressure building and sent me home.

Of course I am still going camping, I wasn't missing it for anything. Saturday morning we wake up and eventually decide to go on a ride, at this time my temple has a nice knot on it, my hand is wrapped and I have plenty of advil in my system. Put the helmet on and cruise around for about 45 minutes, get back to camp and I almost can't take the helmet off. Once I get it off everyone is staring at me like I am an alien, My whole left side of my face was swollen and my eye was turning black.

I sat with my best friend ice for the rest of the weekend and couldn't ride because I didn't dare ride with out a helmet on. Having to look at me like that made the rest of the group wear their helmet all weekend even though there isn't a law in AZ.

I get back to work on Tuesday and they sent me home, I decide to go back to urgent care for a follow up, with the additional swelling and bruising they want to do a cat scan. Everything came back good, just lots of bruising that will take some time to heal.

I will never ever attempt that again, and I will never ever think about moving a quad with out a helmet on.

Red face Wild party!

When I was sixteen, in 1971, my buddy, Bill, celebrated his eighteenth birthday at his parents house. His folks were permissive in every way; any thing was okay with them because they didn't have any inhibitions themselves. Don't think I was in trouble in my living situation myself. I was completely independent of my parents by mutual accord, I answered only to myself.

The evening started out with two large kegs of beer in the backyard, self-serve so to speak. Everyone was having a good time, not least of all me. One of the girls there (five or six years older than me), decided she wanted to get intimate with me. I thought, "Cool." We used Billy's bedroom right after Billy, the birthday boy, vacated the bed warmed with a girl who "gifted" herself to him.
In the middle of all that, my buddy, Stewart, borrowed my '56 Ford to go get something or other. My clothes got misplaced in the confusion; another couple wanted to use the bedroom.
We went back out to the living room, me without a stitch. Another girl, who I knew was the girlfriend of an older and much tougher guy than me drags me aside to do, well you know what.
Someone eventually finds my clothes and returns them to me. Stewart returns my car with an apology that he caused an accident at the gas station that wrecked the mechanic's radiator back-flush machine. Hell, there went my insurance premium! Furthermore, he ignored properly latching the hood. It blew open and bent at the roofline.
A fire had started over near where I was staying that needed immediate attention. A semi-rural area like that had limited public fire suppression. So we unbolted my car's hood and headed over there, ten to my car alone, to help put out the blaze.

Wow, what an evening! I found a replacement hood for ten dollars at a wrecking yard, but it was never possible that the escapades of that night would be forgotten by anyone who was there. Such is adolescence...

My last car was a 2010 1SS RS SIM. One of the first times I washed it I had the windshield wipers pulled away from the windshield in their locked position like they do, forgot that I had them out and then raised the hood. Well it put a pretty good scratch on the edge of the hood closest to the windshield. I only did that once.

Do it, bro! Remember the rules, it must be on the embarrassing side, or it ain't worth telling.

In all honesty, this is the first time I recounted the events of that evening to anyone who wasn't there or who didn't already have indirect knowledge of some of it.

Paging Fbodfather, paging Fbodfather
or anyone else who works in the automotive industry....

Sometime in the early 2000s I was working at a Chevy/Buick/Olds/Pont/GMC dealership as a tech. I did all the regular tech stuff. We had a guy that specialized in front ends/alignments, another for trans work, another for deisels etc. I was the corvette guy. If a vette came in for anything from an oil change to a rear gear swap I did it. The C5 had been out for 3 or 4 years so I had some experience with them. Anyone remember those crappy AC delco batteries that always leaked acid at the positive terminal? The PCM is located just under the battery.
I thought it was a stupid move to place it there by design.

I owned a (1996 C4 LT4) corvette until I traded it last spring for my camaro. I was/am an active member on a vette forum. We would have a gathering similar to camarofest each year at Bowling Green where the vettes are made. At times people from the Corvette staff would show up and talk about cars. It was a great time.
One morning I walk down to the lobby of the hotel where we were staying to grab my free breakfast. It was full of people and as I looked for a place to sit with my orange juice and muffins I spied one empty seat with an older kind looking bespeckled gentleman sitting alone. I asked if I could sit here and he replied yes. I assumed he was just another hungover vette forum member like everyone else there...

The conversation went like this.

Him: Good morning
Me: Thanks, you too
Me: You here for the vette cruise in?
Him: Yes, You too?
Me: Yep, I have been to every one of these things so far.
Him: You own a vette?
Me: Yes, a C4
Him: Any particular reason why a C4?
Me: Well, since you asked yes. I like them, they can be made fast and are still pretty easy to work on plus I'm a vette tech at a GM dealership back in Tennessee.
Him: (his eyes lit up when I said that last part) What do you think about the C5?
Me: (not knowing if he owned a vette or what year I tried to be somewhat nuetral) I like them fine. Lots of power, great drivers etc etc but theres a few things I really dont like design wise but other than that they're great.
Him: (head tilted slightly) Like what kind of design flaws?
Me: Well, all vettes have issues. The later C4s had that great intentioned but poorly executed optispark. On the C5 I'd like to wring the neck of the idiot at GM that put the battery directly on top of the PCM in the C5 for one.
Him: (dead serious look on face, you'd have thought I just killed his dog) We do that to control heat, heat is what kills electronics.
Me: (I had picked up on the we part) Excuse me, what did you say your name was?
Him: Dave Hill
Me:

I left the table after continuing some small talk but I was really hoping I still had a job waiting for me when I got back(I did).

I should have included this info earlier and it just occurred to me. For those who dont know Dave Hill was the head guy at corvette.

I ended up going back to active duty Air Force in 05 so no more worries there.

While I was stationed in Korea in 1999, a friend of mine and I were out drinking (imagine that). After the night of drinking ended we walked back to my dorm room where we talked about things that we did in high school. We got talking about sports and I mentioned I pitched in high school and he mentioned he was his team's catcher. There was a ballfield out behind our dorm so we grabbed a couple of gloves and went to the field. I took to the pitching rubber and fired in a pretty good pitch, oneproblem is when pitching your velocity can be pretty close to what it is normally even when you are drunk. The other problem is when you are catching your reflexes aren't where they should be after a night of drinking. My mid 70's fastball and his slow reflexes equalled a broken nose for him. We were lucky that was all that happened to him that night.

Not something embarassing for me, but was something quite stupid to do.

Ooh, do ya' mean that you'll not share the "meaty" part we all wanna' hear? You sorta' imply your reticence to tell us the full story is because you're exercising your constitutional right to 'take the Fifth Amendment' to decline answering any question put to you that you don't feel like answering because you may believe that whatever you might say could lead to other people thinking poorly of you.

Don't forget that our Camaro5 Forum is all for fun in the first place, ain't it?

OR, is it more probable that ya' mean that you don't wanna' give up any of your fifth size (meaning 1/5 of a gallon) bottle of booze that you just bought. Maybe you were hoping for a full liter (thass bigger) in the first place.

Come on. You stuck your head in our fun filled "noose of comedy" because you wanted to; you oughta' oblige us with a funny tale. Naturally, it's completely up to you to tell us how much you may wanna' reveal, as well as HOW you feel like recounting the tale.

First day driving a route.

All of the drivers get a daily operations sheet that lists who's driving what bus, who drives whose breaks, who takes over when, etc.

For whatever stupid reason, I couldn't remember when my break time was. It was 17:49, 5:49 PM.

At 3:30, I radioed in.

"892 to base, could you give me my break time for CLN4?"

"CLN4 break at 17:49."

"8-4. Thank you."

Maybe I was nervous on my first day, whatever. But I swore he said 16:49.

So at 4:30, I radioed in again.

"892 to base, I think I'm coming up on my break here, should I wait at my relief point?"

"892, not unless you want to wait for over an hour. Stay on route until 17:49."

I got made fun of when I got back to base that night.

THAT is a great story of the mistaken identity type. Hell, Shakespeare used that as his "vehicle" in most of his comedies, didn't he?

AT the end, of YOUR encounter that is, did you realize that it was just gonna' be one of those "what-the-**** moments" and shake his hand and share a laugh?

At the end I was a bit like that but he was nice enough. I really did wonder if I would have a job when I got home there for a moment. I managed to change topics to some of the more positive aspects of the C5 pretty quickly.
I met him at a couple other cruise in events too but I'm sure he doesnt remember me. He brought over a C6 to show off one year before they were on sale yet and another year he brought over a C6 Z06. Theres another story thats much less entertaining that involves a C6 ZO6, me n him standing beside it talking, a random drunk biker and a motorcycle burnout.
Overall Dave was pretty nice, or at least as nice as any engineer can be.

(for those who dont get the humor in that last statement think of Dilbert and how engineers in general lack social skills)
