6 speeds are WAY overrated, as long as 5th gear is geared properly, 6 gears are not needed.
and this is Ford's belief on the subject, too... they assert that there is no need for a more costly 6spd manual when the cheaper 5spd does everything it needs to do... and, for the most part, they're right... the 5spd GT avoids gas guzzler tax and stills gets up and runs just fine... the only benefit to a 6th gear would be improved gas mileage.

IMO, they dont use the TR6060 in the GT because the engine doesn't have enough torque to pull the car hard like the bigger, torquier V8s from GM and Chrysler... but I have NO DATA OR PROOF to back that up... it is just my belief.

GM was using six speed manuals in the late 1980's...... I think the 1989 ZR-1 Corvette was the first car ever with 6 gears. Perhaps Ferraris had 6 speeds by then, but I still believe the Testarossa and F-40 of that era were 5-speeds.

Shortly after that, all V8 equipped F-bodies used nothing but 6 speed sticks.

The extra gear gives you more precise control over the engine, where you want the revs based on how you are driving. It does help with fuel economy no doubt, if you spend most of your day in 6th gear, but the main idea is to make 1st-3rd gears a little shorter than a 5 speed.

You could also say, this is 2009 and perception is everything when buying a car these days. If someone who has no legence to either GM or Ford and cross shops a Camraro SS and a Mustang GT, both with manuals, and sees one with a 5 speed and one with a 6 speed, which do you think will leave the impression of "it's better because it has more gears"? Whether it really is or not isn't even in the equation for that buyer..... the car with the higher number wins.

OUCH....I just KNEW you'd go there THIS MEANS WAR!!!!! (PONY CAR WAR THAT IS)

But hey......better late than never

We'll have to see how your blue oval big wigs fire back for 2011...my guess...GM will still be top on performance, and Ford will still sell more. We'll start off right where the last war ended

Edit: Oh, and don't get all sad when the Mustang GT's with the new powerplants come out and they are over 3-4K more than the current GT. Still making the Camaro SS the leader in price and performance

while I whole heartedly agree with your post, I must also play devil's advocate and point out that there is a faction of people who have never had anything but a five speed manual or look at the six speed manual and say, "wow, that's alot of shifting of gears"... my Dad is amongst the latter group, and doesn't like to drive our six speed cars (thank GOD!) because of it.

Point well taken..... you just never happened to have mentioned to him the 1st-4th skip shift did you? Otherwise, knowing he wouldn't have to shift as much, he might ask to drive your cars

Your kinda close on that one.....the current GM 6speed auto was a joint collaboration with Ford and GM....they will share many internals....only the cases will be different! Great news for the hot rodder.

In the crystal ball of the future I see the 6 speed swap into older 4 speed cars as popular commonplace as the 700R4 swaps into 3 speeds cars during the 90's

i think it would be awesome for two manufaturers to converge on a product for the benefit of the consumer

Well my 03 mach 1 had the 5 speed and my 01 Z 06 has a 6 speed. Having driven both I will say I could care less which it had. In the quarter mile you are never up into 5th and 6th anyway and on the road track it is pretty much the same. Maybe at the salt flats the extra gear would help. On the street at least for me 5th gear in the Vette is just something I row through on the way to 6th. If the final drive ratios are the same 5 sp vs. 6 sp. it does not make any difference really.
