New 5.0 Mustang #8 Cyl Issue

This maybe why Ford put out a bulletin about voiding warranties on the new Mustangs with any modifications/tunes.

I just got done talking to my tuner about this and he said that its not Ford fault its mainly from un experienced tuners that have no idea what they are doing tuning the new 5.0L and its new computer controls. Its a completely different computer and SCT and the shop's were in too big of a rush to get out a performance tune which ended up in a lean condition on #8 because nobody knew the timing tables. The first tunes SCT sent out were super generic and dangerous and just added 2 degrees across the whole rev range without taking load into consideration and only make adjustment once every second which is too slow.

Whatever the reasons are the problems are growing, if I was running a tuned, boosted or cammed 5.0 I would be very worried as from what I have read there is no warning, plugs and data look great one pass and boom on the next. The tuner shops are all denying any responsibilities and playing it down by saying we have run x:xx for times with no issues. Ford also has wised up and are denying the warranty claims, thus the bulletin.

I hate to see this on any car..Ford, Chevrolet, or Dodge. I cannot find joy in this.

Ringlands crack from knock from sub-par tunes.

Mentioned this here before, this is/was all tune related. Cars running power adders haven't seen the same problems as they are running a custom tune generally. Long and short of it is there were several vendors releasing way lean tunes because they couldn't calculate lambda correctly resulting in 13+ A/F ratios creating detonation/failure. 12.5 is optimal on a N/A car.

This is not a Ford issue. They released the TSB in response to the poor canned tunes customer's were unknowingly using. No different than GM or Chrysler's stance.

Bottom line, use a reputable tuner, dyno the car and check A/F ratios.

100% tuner fault; I'd go to Vegas and bet on it.

When new engines come out, aftermarket companies will rush products out for it so they can cash in on the new market share. Unfortunately, this often means testing isn't as rigorous as it should be.

This is why exhaust is the only thing I've done so far. I'll let time work the kinks out of the aftermarket scene.

You got to pay to play. I haven't heard of any stock motor problems.

If the shoe fits. I know everyone on here would love to see ford having problems with the 5.0 but the fact is, in stock form they are not. We've had our far share of LS motors go south after a mod on this very forum. Like I said you got to pay to play ,but why should the manufacturer pay the bill.

Do you know what causes a broken ringland? Detonation. Do you know what causes detonation?

the cause is still up in the air at the moment, some say tuners who dial back the knock sensors to run more timing are the cause, others think there was a very small number of motors with an internal issue. we have sold a very large number of tunes for the 5.0 and have not had any issues, including my own car that has been raced and run hard for the last 6 months straight.

things happen in first run production, no company is immune to issues.

the cause of the small number of cyl 8 failures will be figured out soon so we can know for sure.

I think it's too soon to make a statement that it's definitely the tuners and not Ford's fault at all. I want to hear more about it. It's funny that every mustang guy here is so quick to point the finger at the tuners.

its bc the original rumor was the tuners.

some tuners early on had dialed back the knock sensors to be able to run lots of timing. the ones who did this sent out tune revisions after they heard of the cyl 8 failures, some viewed this as the cause at the time, it has spread from that
