Where did you learn Auto Mechanics?

I'm getting interested in learning how an engine runs,
and what all the parts do. So my question is, where is a good place to start learning the basics?

Learned from my dad as a kid. Then just started tearing into everything. Was building motors by 16. Then took auto mechanics in high school seams like I only learned brakes in class.

I don't have any car friends. It sucks. I want to learn how to do stuff myself. And I am afraid to break stuff in this new car. Good thing I can bang around in my wife's old car a bit.... But I'm still not learning anything seriously useful.

A buddy of mine got a job as a lube tech at a dealership. As you get more experienced, sometimes they'll show you additional maintenance and other work.

Bought a non-running 67 Pontiac Tempest while in the Navy, tore it apart and put it all back together with new parts and it actually ran great. Figured if it did not run when I was done, I was only out a few hundred dollars to see what everything looked like tore apart, cheaper than going to school for 6 months.

Started on go karts when I was about 12. Rebuilt them a few times and modified with my grandpa then eventually moved to cars at 16. The mechanical aspect is pretty simple once you understand how the engine works and what processes take place. Tuning takes a bit more understanding of the math and physics.

This=OJT (on the job training)

I started changing tires and oil at my local K-Mart in 1975. I went full time to part time once I was hired for the fire service. Retired from the auto service business as a ASE certified tech. You need to show you have initiative and make good decisions.

The best part is OJT is free.
