What happens when a 35,000 pound 40 foot Gillig Phantom slams into a Mazda 3. Doesn't look too bad until you find out that she was pulling out of Hagerty Drive when the bus hit her and spun her onto the sidewalk and into that sign (which costs about $10k, by the way).

Driver actually violated procedure by swerving to only hit the front fender. If someone pulls out in front of you and you have no chance of stopping in time, we are actually told in training to ram the car head-on.

That's how it was on the railroad..... yeah, taught not to swerve . Seriously though, they taught us not to touch the brakes til you hear a bang or a thud (depending if its a car or a person). If its a deer or anything else..... just keep going. Although if its a deer, you'd never know it unless you saw it, don't feel a thing and rarely hear anything from it.

I do not understand the reasoning someone would try to cross the tracks last second, it is the dumbest thing ever.

yeah, if I touched the brakes every time someone tried something stupid.... we'd miss them every time and take 45 minutes to stop and then restart. Half the time it happens so fast that you've already hit them before you ever see anything. Even if you saw them from 1/4 mile away (very rare for that)... you could only lose maybe 5 mph.... won't do much. The worst thing to see is a semi/tanker on the tracks..... never know what's inside and it usually doesn't end well. I hit a dump truck once, hit so hard (at 35mph) it knocked me out of my seat and on the floor! Took a 5200ft long train about 5,000 feet to stop from 35!

How'd the truck and train look after the hit?

it sheared the engine off the transmission in the dump truck.... everything in front of the windshield was gone..... still hate I didn't get any pics of that truck, got a few of the locomotive though. Just as a reference.... that steel plate in front of the steps that's bent and torn in half is 1" thick!

wanna know why?

hitting it head on presents the greatest surface area of the vehicle to come into contact to allow for the greatest dispersion of crash energy. that and when hitting cars head on, or Tboning them, thats where cars are designed to have the most strength, straight on (front or rear) and directly from the sides.

no, he was very lucky.... he locked the brakes at the last second (he was doing 70 in a 45) and it cut off everything in front of the dash..... the steering column was torn out! It broke his leg in 3 places and when I got back to where he was, he had crawled out onto the ditch, shaking and was trying to light up a cigarette . I guess if a crash like that won't kill you, the cigarettes are fine . I asked him if he was alright and he goes "yeah"...... then I notice a bone sticking out of the side of his leg...... he couldn't even feel it from the shock.... sure wasn't a pretty scene, thats the main reason why I didn't take any pics of the truck.
