Yep, and the Charger looks like a Mitsubishi Lancer!

The engine is a joke? I don't think so. Put a supercharger on top of it like the ZL1 and the GT500 and see what a supercharged Hemi can do. It would still be a pig though.

They just need to pump the HP to over 500 to make it even seem like its in the same class. Just because it's bigger doesn't mean people won't want to race it against other 2 door cars... That's my main point. You give it a 470HP engine when you know the competition is putting out 550+HP for their top of the line engines, weight aside, it just seems underwhelming. At least play the numbers game and get the HP past 500.
The people who are going to race them against the GT500 and ZL1 will mod their cars. ANd you are looking too much into the weightdifference, the Camaro is quite a pig itself, it just doesn't have the extra price, room, or features to show for it and the ZL1 will be even heavier (I would be at LEAST 4100 pounds). ALso a lot of Dynos and times are showing true HP at the crank to be more like 500, automatic equipped Challengers are hitting as quick as 12.4, which BTW isn't but a few 10ths off the GT500 with the stock tires. Unlike the GT500 and ZL1, the C SRT8s are multi mission cars, race em on the weekends, take a family of 5 on a vacation, take it to work everyday, load it out how you want it (in dash hard drive, 19 speaker sound system, special SRT Leather seats, shift paddles, adaptive suspension with multiple settings, etc, etc.

Look at it this way, Buicks FWD 4 cylinder Buick GS is supposed to run around 40k and these cars would simply murder it. I am a little little surprised at the grand Cherokee SRT's price, of course the closest vehicles to it are made by Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche and you are looking at at least 30k more and the Grand Cherokee and the new ML even share a platform! So yes, i guess it is a screaming bargain too!
LOL, I'm sorry but i find it hilarious that you bring in the Buick regal gs to the discussion. A car with a completely different market in mind. Also I still don't know why people keep insisting on compare the camaro SS to the challenger srt8, when its competition is the challenger R/T and mustang GT.

Early dynos for most new performance cars seem to indicate that the engine is under rated. And oddly enough, none of those early runs seem to be for any practical purpose (ie baseline run for soon to be added mods). Its if people strap them down only to see what it puts to the wheel ... and then brag that its 'under rated'.

Thing is, if its rated under the current SAE testing protocols, it is NOT under rated any more (or less) than all the other cars that use that testing procedure, from 4 banger Camry's to 600+ hp sports cars. They all have to be producing within a certain percentage of advertised power in order to use the 'SAE Certified' claim. There is a bit of wiggle room, but not 30+ hp worth (unless perhaps you're at ~900 hp).

Also, tell me why you can't use a GT500 or ZL1 as an everyday car? The GT500 is essentially loaded from the factory (like the SRT8) and I would bet that the ZL1 will be as well. Sure, you can't fit 4 passengers in either of them but if I had to be hauling around that many people I wouldn't even think about getting a coupe. Maybe Challenger owners have never had to be a passenger in the back of a coupe, but in my experience its something that should be avoided if possible. And stuffing 3 people back there? I don't care how big the car is, I can guarantee you that they'll be unhappy unless they're small children. Even then, they probably won't like it.

The big difference with these cars is that they are more practical than Camaros and Mustangs. You can reliably use the back seats for transportation, especially in the 300C and Charger. Comparing a 300C and a Camaro is ridiculous. The only car in this group competing against the Camaro is the Challenger, and even at that it's still a much bigger car. I gotta agree that an SRT8 isn't going to win a drag race with a ZL1 or GT500, but the people buying these cars already know that.

If I was going to buy one, I'd buy about a 2 year old model when they drop down what they are really worth. I wouldn't spend that kind of cash on a new Dodge or Chrysler. That Jeep, on the other hand, is one of the hottest SUVs on the road, even up there with the Cayenne turbo in performance. It may be worth a look in comparison to say an X5 M. Just sayin!

Why does the Challenger have a gas guzzler tax, and not the Charger? Same chassis, same engine....what is the difference?
