I bet more truckers than that check their tire pressures at regular intervals. With gas prices up, truckers look for every way possible to reduce their gas bill. Properly inflated tires are the best way to make your vehicle more fuel efficient.

I drove 135 miles one way on i65 earlier today. My passenger took a video of one section of road that had no less than 6 full sized retreads in and on the highway. I'm guessing the video is less than 2 minutes; so just over 2 miles. I'll post it up as soon as I figure out how to get it from her phone.

I don't think any visible length of the roadside was free from debris ( granted small chunks of rubber) and full size retreads could be seen on a regular basis. Fortunately, only one of these was actually in the road - I managed to drive around it.

I can't be the only one seeing these ?

Yes, given the sheer volume of truck traffic that travels on the highways in this country, I am not surprised that there is a substantial amount of debris due to tire failures.

But your entire argument hinges on how deadly retread failures are. Did you see any cars on the side of the road with decapitated drivers in them during your trip?

Nope - not this trip. But if you want blood and guts in a story read a few posts up....

My entire argument should be read to rest on making the highways safe once more. I find it hard to believe a viable counterpoint can rest on the fact that we should just drive around these hazards and suck it up.

If your end goal is for the highways to be free of debris forever, then banning retreads is hardly the answer.

More research to design a better tire compound would be a good place to start

When outside temps are high you see more gators on the roadway... most likely what you saw was one retread with a debris field over a large area. The other pieces very well could have been there for a while, states don't go out on a daily basis and pick up debris.

Once fall comes around, watch them all but disappear.

Could be - it would have been a very very lrge diameter tire though. These things were easily 5 feet long if anything....

Truck tread probably is 10 ft long or better, it's also hard to judge size while moving... Example: how long would you say the center divider stripes are on an interstate? 4 feet? 6 feet? 8 FEET?

Circumference of a circle is 2*pi*r. So with our tires (and I'm rounding pi to 3.00) we've got 60" circumference. That's 5 feet. I've seen trunk tires that had to be at least 36-40" so 8-10 feet of retread isn't asking that much.

275 75 22.5 is ~36" so you're pretty close.

Anybody ever see the police dash cam of that state trooper that was doing a traffic stop and a retread blows? Trooper is walking up to the drivers side just as a semi is passing and the trailer blows a tire. Tire flys and hits the trooper breaking his collar bone and some other bones. What are the odds a tire would blow at that exact moment.

The all important question though: did it decapitate him?
