I don't know...Long before I actually went to work for a fast food place, I knew how to count change. My dad taught me how to count change back long before I had a job. So, when I did work a cash register, I knew exactly what to do when counting back change. This was back in the late 1970's.

To me, the above situation is both a failure of the cashier AND that cashier's parents.

Don't do it. I went to a McDonald's up at school (McFlurry's are my weakness) and paid with a $2 bill. They called the police, told the officer that I was attempting to pay with counterfeit currency, and that they should arrest me on the spot.

Luckily the officer was a bit older. He looked at me, looked at the $2 bill, looked at the cashier, looked at the $2 bill, then just shook his head.

I worked a Cash register for almost 4 years while in College. I sometimes would just "Cash out" the drawer once the total was given without entering the amount tendered...so it would show change due as zero. I would do the math in my head and give it to them. One lady challenged me and told me to count it out backwards....without a skip...just took the change back and counted it back to her....so don't always assume the minimum wage earning cashier is a dolt...not all of us are/were.

During my days as a cashier , registers did not tell what change was due the customer.

Oh yeah....I always appreciated the drunks and druggies who would come in and pay with silver dollars, rare wheat pennies and buffalo nickels, so on and so forth to pay for a beer and cigarettes....thank you very much... Don't know whose collection they raided...but...at the end of the day, I just collected money.

I have no problem with that, you should have told her what you were doing. Do you have any idea of what pressure there is in one of those nests of shit. Please realize we aren't all albert einstein on our first or last jobs, and if you get some bad service once in a while try to understand

Not too long ago My Wife and I were at Dillards. She bought about $247 worth of clothes, I handed the cashier 3 $100 Bills. She told Me that they didn't take cash!! I SAID WHAT THE F***!! She said that I would have to take the merchandise that we wanted to purchase down to the 1st floor to the Customer Service Offices to use cash.....

I like it when they check my bills to see if they are counterfeit, with the pen, and I ask them why they are checking it and what would happen if they were counterfeit they say they would have to call the police and I could be arrested. So when they give me my change back (in paper money) I ask them to check they money and if its counterfeit I will call the police and have them arrested. Any they give me this look like they never thought of it that way.

I don't feel like the OP needed to explain why he gave her the amount he did. Now, if I'm out of line please someone feel free to reel me back in, but it is basic grade school subtraction Quick. What is 12-7? My father owned a restaurant, so I have worked on the cashier side of things, but I'm sorry. Not only is it simple subtraction, but the cash register does it for you. All you have to do is enter the amount you were given and the machine does the rest. Being a cashier is like being a middle man, you do the leg work for the cash register and give the customer their change.

I think Vlad is saying: everyone has mathematical mindflatulence every once in a while, especially if you aren't naturally gifted with numerical talents.

Now, getting IMPATIENT with a customer over it - no. And if the register will tell you how much, so that you just have to count out the amount it says and not even count back the change - weird.

P.S. No, Vlad doesn't work at Burger King.

I shouldn't have to explain a simple transaction up front but after she said that, I did explain. I said "I know, I was hoping to get a $5 bill back".

She rang it up on the register and I guess it told her $5 in change. I think she felt a little stupid or thought I was mad about it, which I wasn't.

As she handed me the change she said "Oh, I was just checking. Sometimes customers don't realize they hand me too much money."

And by the way, this wasn't a kid. She was probably in her early 30's.
