The ante is strong with this one.
The best I can mentally establish is that "concatenate" is an adjective. Woe: immense grief. Concatenate: Strictly thought out or composed?

No. Concatenate means to join together in a contiguous series. It's a term used in telecom quite a bit regarding bandwidth across a network. |

Since I ain't one of 'em, I couldn't tell ya'. If you're willing to tolerate my clumsy efforts to play with the "big boys", I'll give it my humble best.
Word at hand: deflagrate. The "de" prefix indicates a negation, right? "flagration" makes me consider "fire" in some form. Could it be to put out a fire? "Flagration" also tells me something along the lines of farting. Could it be the expulsion all of intestinal fumes? "Flagellate" means scourging or whipping in some way; it also means to move about by the waving of pendulous tissues. Paramecia travel that way. Of course, flagellate involves a serious change in spelling. Could it be to 'de-wing', so to speak, the creature? I think the proposed solutions are presented in order of their likelihood of accuracy. Last edited by Ivas; 07-12-2011 at 06:41 PM. Reason: typo |

Your contributions to this thread certainly display themselves as coming from one who has an element of mastery over words. With the presence of a medical student, a possible English major (?), and some with poetic exposure, I've had to draw from a different area of experience in an attempt to have you folks stumped.
![]() Here's a hint: Your first guess is partially well directed - deflagration is associated with volatility, and the prefix is indication that the fueling compound is broken down in the process. However, it has nothing to do with extinguishing a fire.

Is it the breaking down of wood as it's matter is being converted into fire (and/or energy depending how you look at it).

Getting warmer...
Not quite, Stieger. It has more bearing on the manner in which something combusts, as determined by its readiness or propensity to burn.

Some things are readier to burn than others, some things won't burn at all, hmm. But does this have any bearing on the issue at hand? It's the "flag" bit, isn't it? It has a connection with the highly reactive element: Fluorine? Nah, that's just a coîncidence of spelling... C'mon fellahs, we're fading as I speak... |

Alright, you guys gave it a good effort and were getting the general idea in mind, so let's reboot.
Deflagrate: To burn suddenly or violently. Burning gunpowder demonstrates this very well. I will defer the new word to the next poster.
