Soon to be ex-navy...
So I used to be a nuclear electrician on a submarine. I'm looking at being out of the navy here within the next couple months and I'm looking for a job...
I am an EM2, with 5 years in. Anybody out there know of any good opportunities in an engineering or technical field? I have a lot of experience with ac/dc and 120V and 450V systems. I'm really interested in "green energy", fuel cells, solar power and such. I wouldn't say no to a good operator position either. I own a house in Norwich, CT and would be looking for something I could commute to. However, I have family in the Denver, CO area and would love to be near them as well, Any input at all would be much appreciated! Thanks

Not sure about the Navy, but in the Army you say "Former" not "Ex". Ex means you were removed involuntarily (Captains Mass, etc).
Also, most posts, stations, etc have an outprocessing flow that has optional career building courses for when you are completely out. I'd take advantage of that. It helped with a lot of DOs and DON'Ts that weren't so common sense in the civilian world. Civilians are a much gentler bunch (at least to Army). : /

Nuclear generating stations! A guy I work with just got out of the Navy six months ago, now he's making $40 an hour.
My Camaro is powered by Fission

Unless you were a fodbag, you should be able to walk right into a nuclear power plant. Have you gone to TAP yet?

Types of jobs that have technically savvy engineering types working on tools that manufacture items related to the semi-conductor industry.
![]() One of the big requirements is an engineering degree of sorts or equivalent experience I believe. Cheers K |

I will put my feelers out for you and send you anything I find that may apply. Take the good advice of working up your resume, but not a generic resume. Write your resume specifically for each job you apply for. Hit the right keywords and triple check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. Flood the market with your resume and absolutely post it on Monster, Military.com and the like.
Go to TAP class and pay close attention to "dress for success" and the resume writing workshop. They are invaluable. Also..keep in mind...you need to consider the dollar amount you accept for a civilian job. Taxes are higher as you pay taxes on every dollar earned as opposed to the military benefits of housing allowance, commuted rations, etc. Good luck and I hope you find a job to your liking before you outprocess and walk out the door on terminal leave.

Awesome! Thanks to you all for the info!
I hear you on the "former", I will definitely start using that instead. Resume, yes. I have a fairly short but sweet resume. I am right at 5 years so it's not extensive, but strong I think. I am working with a headhunter and I've got a couple really promising prospects. I have been to TAP class and absolutely agree, well worth it! Again, thanks to you all for your input!
