Ahh, it must be someone (a woman as you clue us) who was being rolled. In a wheelchair maybe? And she must be aging, from her own words.
Let's see, could it be Eleanor Roosevelt? (though I don't recall her ever having been in a wheelchair). Could it be Hellen Keller?

I don't know how old she was when she said it.... or if she was wheelchair bound, either... but not Helen keller. Think women's lib (not 60's style)...

Could it be Susan B. Anthony or Carrie Nation, or even Mother Jones, or Emma Goldman?

A dangerous look, huh???? Sounds vampire-ish, but Dracula is a fictional character (in that sense anyway) and this thread isn't about fiction, so.... Bela Lugosi? Or was it another actor in the Dracula role?

"Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is"

Oh, you am soo correct about the fictional character. Yeah, the quote is from the author, Bram Stoker. We gotta' be frightfully (especially in this case) diligent to separate direct quotes (what we want) from indirect quotes made through intermediaries.

As to your quote. The most famous autodidact whom I can name, Abraham Lincoln, would agree, but would he apply so thorough an objective evaluation to education as a whole? I think not. Alack. :(

Benjamin Franklin would agree as it pertained to himself, yet he founded what is today the University of Pennsylvania. The same could be said about other autodidacts of the Ancient World. Wow, you've provided us a tough one here.

Would a small hint not be in the offing?

A 20th Century educator, author and professor, hmm, could it be John Dewey, the "father" of modern american pedagogy? Or, wow, I almost forgot, Piaget the Swiss psychologist who worked out the different levels of cognition in the learning process.

Nope, but in my search for good hints, I found an interesting tidbit that contains the word Dewey - his works have been published in 9 of the 10 major categories of the Dewey Decimal system (I know, different Dewey....)

John Dewey also headed the international committee that debunked the Stalinist Show Trials of the Old Bolsheviks that railroaded Leon Trotsky, et al to their demise in short order, at Stalin's behest, during the late 1930's.

Returning to your quote, I'm hazarding my best guesses (this one is bordering on maniacal). This quote was said by me on Camaro5.

You wouldn't use it as a quote though...

Wow! Stumped you again!!
"Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is" was said by Isaac Asimov...

Let's see if I can do it again...

"I pictured myself as a virus or a cancer cell and tried to sense what it would be like."

Aha, you ain't gonna' stump me again, so soon. Dr. Salk who gave the world the vaccine for polio at NO COST. He was a real mensch.

"Hasta la victoria siempre." Hint: He preferred saying this phrase to saying the more typical "Good bye".

Ps: The translation is loosely "Until final victory."

Che Guevara (did I spell that right? )

On another revolutionary note, and patriotic for this Independence Day...

"There, I guess King George will be able to read that."

Happy 4th!!!:flag2:
