Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition
on a basic level, its compression ignition (no spark plug) for gasoline engines. discuss

It gives me the impression that it's going to have a lot of the same bad performance characteristics that a diesel engine has. Let's hope not!

thats mainly only for larger diesel truck engines that make OMGWTFBBQ power down low and have heavy rotating assy's that are better suited for low RPM power vs smaller diesels that make their power higher in the powerband.

Anyway, I'm thinking this sort of engine (at least early on) will be perfect for series hybrid cars like the Volt. Currently the prototypes only have a limited RPM range that they can opperate in, but thats fine if you've got a Volt. As engineers learn to expand the envelope, it could be adopted in parallel hybrids then regular cars & trucks

HCCI is old.
Okay, not really. Last I read about it, the biggest issues they needed to overcome for production was NVH, top-end performance (above speeds of 55mph required the spark again to work), and calibration. This technology takes the complexity of DI to a WHOLE new level. Seems pretty cool on the surface. I look forward to watching how it develops. Great video, btw, Spike! |

to further the discussion on "future" technologies... how bout GM's BAS system? http://www.hybridcars.com/types-syst...-starters.html another "old" technology, that is just barely starting to make its way into the mainstream automotive design.

Allow me to rephrase that. Problems like diesel cars had when they were first introduced.

If you read up on those crazy high mile cars from the past and was still a carb or early FI. They super heated the fuel to basically do like a refinery and crack the fuel molecules. The high heat and compression of like a diesel could do that right???
----------- Now with the new cruise matching the VW diesel MPG on the highway [42MPG for both cars] you have to wonder if that’s the end of diesel in passenger cars. No real point if they don’t get allot better mileage with the fuel costing $1.50+ more per gallon. |
