what's also omitted from this report is something I heard from an economist on the radio. The Volt costs $80,000 to produce, taking into consideration it's run volume and it's taxpayer subsidy, and development cost. It's sold at $40,000 plus the $7,500 tax credit subsidy (again thanks taxpayer). So taxpayers take a $40,000 hit each time one is sold. Isn't that special?:mad02 60:

So for about the same money... A volt or a Camaro?

Tell me... we're burning coal to produce energy for an electric car and that's "green"?
If you believe what "economists" on the radio tell you, I have a bridge I would like to sell you.

Even if true, no different than the Bush tax write-off for "companies" purchasing vehicles over a certain weight. Yeah, so many businesses needed a full size fully loaded SUV. Didn't hear bitching from a specific party then. Wonder why?

I was about to say that the tax credit wasn't only for the Volt as the article implies. But the Jalopink article points that out. If there is a tax loophole, then it should be closed, just like the many other loopholes that profitable companies enjoy, to be fair, of course. What's that saying, you can't have your cake and eat it too...

Dealers do the same thing up here to get around the fact that they aren't allowed to sell a new car for more than MSRP ... they just sell in demand used cars for over MSRP . In the end, it works out to the same thing: buying a new car with no intention of keeping it, but rather re-selling it immediately to make a few grand. It stinks, but I don't see anything that could be done to stop it. The buyer of the car gets the credit. Car dealers can buy cars just like the rest of us. Whats the solution, add page after page of paperwork to confirm that you do indeed plan on using the car? Who is going to check up on that? There are much bigger fish to fry for the IRS than some car dealers getting a few grand off their taxes for buying & re-selling the Volt.

The automakers are pretty much powerless to stop this, and they aren't the ones responsible for it in the first place. The dealerships themselves are the ones that have to put an end to it, but they won't either.
