Apparently, the navy is not taking your commitment to serve seriously. When I was young I met with all of the recruiters before making a decision. The army promised money for college, the navy said I would see the world, and the air force promised technical training. The Marine Corps said they would only promise me one thing and that was that I would see combat before I got out. I signed up for 6 years and before I left I had the privilege of visiting Kuwait City on day three of the ground war with the I MEF in 1991. The Marines fulfill their promises.

You’re not even in yet and the navy has already missed on several promises, I say join The Corps. This is just one old grunt’s point of view. God’s Speed to you no matter what you choose to do.

I am Retired NAVY and one of my sons decided to join the Marines. So to have fun with My Son and Tease him i would always ask him when I spoke with him "How The Lesser Part of the Navy Was Doing." The looks I would get from him and his Marine buddies was priceless.

Former Navy Recruiter Here.

He's got a couple things that may be affecting the hold here:

1) As mentioned, he has met his goal for the month and is hanging on to you to start the next month strong. All services do this so don't let anyone fool you.

2) Navy is drawing down and they may be holding applicants for the next month because they are over.

3) There are imes when more jobs are available. I'd bet one of the first two is more likely.

Additionally, no recruiter should be selling you on job. Recruiters have no say in what you can be guaranteed. That is the role of the "Classifier" at MEPS and you won't see that person until you clear all the medical, background, ASVAB, etc. Another item, understand that when you pick a job, your perception of the work you will be doing is likely nothing like what it really will be. You will take real skills with you when your time is up but everything is different on a ship.

Finally, the higher your ASVAB the more choices you will have. Other things can affect your options: record, drug history, health, etc. Bottom line, give it a week and see what happens. Rushing into it is not necessary.

This is all good info. From what I understand, there is a big hiring freeze. The Navy has been downsizing for awhile now. It's just as hard to stay in as it is to get in unfortunately (having to meet Perform To Serve, or PTS, requirements) and all of that stuff. I was told that there englisting people for IT positions and of course SpecOps stuff like SEAL, SWCC, EOD, etc.

He's met his quota and it's possible he is waiting for billets to open up. It is worth the wait to find the job that you want (and DON'T go in undesignated and "shadow" jobs You'll clean toilets for a few years before you get the opportunity to work.) Trust me, you'll have plenty of time to wait around, lol. Don't settle for another branch in the meantime. Make sure you do what you want.

Tell them you want to be a Nuke. They used to count for 2 recruits. Of course, that was back in 1980. Of course, you got to have the scores to do it and take an Nuclear Field Qualification Test (NFQT). But not sure what they do today. I walked in and asked to be a nuclear machinist's mate. The guy couldn't jump out of his chair fast enough to sign me up. Unbelievable.

Regardless, in a few years, you probably won't remember a whole lot about your recruiter's efforts other than your EAOS.

I dont know what you said, but going NUKE, from what ive seen, is the best choice for anyone looking for a career afterwards. Navy nuke experience? You can get a 6 figure job by just showing up to an interview for a nuke plant. My company has a boner for ex-navy nuke guys. hahahaha!!!

Get your degree at university, apply to officers training, receive a commission from Congress as an officer and a gentleman, then go boss that recruiter around. Lol.

OK.... a lot of speculation and former experience in this thread.....

let me tell you the deal, from a CURRENT RECRUITER.... who knows whats going on in the here and now, as opposed to the "in my day", "last year", "well i think"
by the way, i mean no offense to anybody else who has posted.

So here's the deal.....

I am a Marine Corps recruiter, but i am in a small southern town, where all the branches are pretty honest and legit (unlike the stereotype). I am that way because its who I am, some are simply because in a town this small you can't get away with any dishonesty.

Our navy recruiter has referred many people over to us, for what is probably the same reason you are getting screwed around.

He is not able to enlist anybody else for the year.

The same thing happened in the summer last year.

Right now the navy is trying to do some downsizing, and recruiting is far to easy for them. Therefore, when the new fiscal year starts, and it is a new school year, the Navy fills up for the year with high school seniors. Then by this time of year, they are full.

What your recruiter is doing, is trying to keep you interested, so that you will sign up either A. later in the summer should one of his current "recruits" drop out.... or B. once the fall comes around.

My advice to you would be to think about A. what you want to get from the military, B. if the Navy is the best thing for you/the best what to get what you wanted (item A.). C. talk to all other branches, to see if they may be a better fit.
