What makes a car street legal?

Just have a question. if I were to build my own car would I have to meet all safety requirements and emissions to legally be able to drive it on a public road? Seat belts air bags etc.

You would need it to pass inspections. Air bags, prob not, but everything else.

Boy is that a loaded question. First off it depends on your state what you need to due. There are many people that sell kit cars that can be made street legal. I know in Pa they carry a different tag brand and you have to go through an inspection process to get them to pass.

Contact your state's DMV and I'm sure they will be able to help you with any questions and proper paper work to get a garage built car legal for street use.
