It still gets very good mileage using the extended rage with gas. Think about how often you will be using gas in this car versus any other car.
I guess it's just suppose to be a step in reducing dependability in foreign oil. Not a huge step but at least we now have the technology to get there very soon.
I think it's a very good car for an average commute. 40 miles or less

im just curious if its a false step....my commute from boise to mountain home is 58 miles and i drive that twice a day for 5 days a week and what if i want to take a vacation, buy another car? Im driving at least 75 on the interstate because thats the speed limit here and if i read right someone stated that the gas motor is running above 70mph right? i couldnt agree more about it being a small step but i still think the technology needs to be researched and improved before we even consider this as a replacement just like with every new product that comes out of the factory rushed, its going to have glitches. id rather wait and see how the ultimate hybrid or w/e comes out is, and like fen said you can get a malibu that accelerates as the same rate and still get about the same in mpgs and still be cheaper.

A Malibu doesn't go 40 miles without a single drop of gas.

You're missing the point. The Volt is a commuter car that offers you the flexibility of a longer trip. Most people aren't going to use it as their sole car, although again, it does offer you that flexibility if you want.

Your commute distance is in the minority. For a commute such as yours, the 2013 Malibu ECO or Cruze ECO would be a better fit.

Nobody ever said the Volt was about saving money. If thats your goal, why not buy a 10 year old Civic?

Buying a new car is probably the worst thing you can do to save money on gas...unless you're going from a bus to a Cruze or something...

The gasoline engine runs in conjunction with the electric motor. It basically functions as a conventional hybrid.

........yes but doesnt the electric motor shut off and the gas engine operates above 70 mph and charges the electric motor?

No. The gasoline engine clutches onto the electric motor and assists it in powering the car. The ICE never recharges the Volt, even when running in extended-range mode at non-highway speed. The Volt has no onboard recharging mechanism besides regenerative braking.

Which also makes the Volt really seem like an overly complex hybrid. Why couldn't they just do a simple diesel-electric inspired thing and go with a true onboard recharging system like a single or twin cylinder ICE coupled to a generator?

Weight? Safety?

Why haven't ANY companies tried this?
