I wonder what the average speed was in those races vs the average speed in todays races.

I was at the local car museum and had a look at 1916 Model T Indy Racer. Its amazing that anyone could have survived accidents in cars like that. If you want the equivilant today, sup up your riding lawn mower so it does 100 mph and go racing. You had to be borderline crazy to race back in the day.
