But what if the league decides to let the 32 separate businesses operate that way? There would be no draft; NFL teams would recruit players like colleges do. Players would sign contracts and become free agents once those contracts expire. With no minimum salaries, owners could pay as much — or as little — as they want for any and all players, limited only by the minimum wage.
The question becomes whether such an approach would screw up the competitive balance of the league. When considering that several franchises hovering well below what would have been the salary floor for 2010 had successful seasons, teams may realize that overspending for a football team carries little or no guarantee of success on the field.
Though the league surely would never do it, a commitment to the same fiscal discipline that was seen in 2010 would prevent a situation in which only a handful of teams have a chance of winning the Super Bowl — and in which a handful of franchises would never be competitive.

I'm all for this. Sink or swim. Be competitive with your team, or lose it.

two sides have agreed on a rookie salary cap ...maybe the Pats will keep those first 3 picks in the top 33...any other year, you know Belichicks wheelin & dealin with those.

Next owner demand, no saving trades beyond the next trading year

Hello lock out. Only action we are going to be seeing is in the court room. Wonder if directv will being selling the NFL court tv package this season?

This blows. When billionaires fight millionaires the person who lose the most is us.....the fans.

Oh well......at least the Knicks are relevant again so I have the NBA for now. They will never let this happen to them...................

The NFL labor landscape was 15 minutes away from official implosion Friday when union leader DeMaurice Smith emerged from Federal Mediation Conciliation Service headquarters in Washington D.C. and addressed a swarm of reporters.

Standing on the corner of 21st and K Street, the NFL Players Association’s executive director made a brief, forceful statement that delivered one final dare to the league’s owners: Agree to open your books within the quarter hour, or prepare for a battle royale.

Given that Smith surely understood there was almost no chance of the owners accepting those terms, his pronouncement was quickly portrayed as a public relations move designed to cast the union as the side which made the last offer before talks broke down and decertification ensued. And while there may have been an element of truth in that thinking, most observers missed the point.

I hope the players end out on their asses.

Simply put, my feelings are that, especially in this economy, I don't want to here a bunch of babies whine that millions a year isn't enough money to play a freaking game. I don't care how much the owners make, the Players make more than enough as it is, so who cares. I don't care if they are sacrifing their bodies, the ones that play that much make enough in a year to retire on comfortably the rest of their life. Besides, no one is holding a gun to their head and forcing them to play; if they don't like it, they can go get a different job.

I love football, but I think I'm done. I have better things to do on a Sunday than watch these spoiled brats throw a ball around. I also think the next few years will be interesting, as I suspect more people are going to feel like me and stop watching altogether, especially if there are any missed games due to a strike. Heck, the bucs were blacked out all last season because they couldn't sell enough tickets. If there's a strike, they may really go down.

Basically, if the played don't quit their whining, this may be the beginning of an end for NFL as we know it, and in a few years the players may be wishing they had their pre '11 salaries back!
