Anyone Else Noticed

There just seems to be a neverending release of cool cars in the last few years and even more recently! It's just amazing right now what you can buy compared to the end of the 20th century. I mean, even the station wagons are cool now! Anyone that lived through the Mustang II era surely understands what I'm talking about! We are being spoiled now by the huge selection of quality and cool cars. It's a great time to be a gearhead!

The design work going into these new cars is just amazing. When I was in high school, most cars seemed pretty bland, but we've turned a big corner.

It kills me a little inside every time I think about the cars I grew up with (mid eighties), that were considered performance cars compared to what we have now. The horsepower has more than doubled, the handling and braking are worlds better, the quality has vastly improved, and the gadgets available were things of Sci-Fi back then.

Oh, and the safety, while adding bulk, is worth the trade off. The death tolls prove this.

I think this is going to be looked back on as a pinnacle in performance cars like the 60's are today. I just wonder how long it will last?

The thing that worries me is that we'll see another dip into the dark ages like in the 70s with all the new CAFE regs and gas prices increasing. Luckily I think automakers have learned those lessons well from back then....

The value of German engineering is extremely over rated. Generally speaking, they over engineer things such that they become needlessly complex and/or precise, typically resulting in higher cost and lower reliability (except in cases with much higher cost with comparable reliability). All this is to eek out a product with a slightly better spec sheet. If you're looking for high-end lab equipment where precision matters more than cost, the Germans are great. But cars? I'll take the typically American credo of "Keep It Simple Stupid!" any day of the week.
