He's probably referring to BB referencing horsepower instead of miles per hour...

something about those units don't sit right with me... maybe i'm missing something
a Newton is a force, not a torque. i.e. Force = mass x acceleration, N = kg x m/s^2 how can they be equating Newtons to Pound feet of torque? that's like saying 1 = 2 Edit: I found this on Wikipedia that kind of explains it. basically you can't interchange Joules with Nm (referencing torque) even though they're dimensionally similar. Joules are an energy where the distance represents displacement (paralell with the force) and not the distance from the fulcrum (torque) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_metre

looking at the flow rate of the fuel (assuming the average energy content of ~30 Mj/L) the jet engines potentially produce about 555 Mj/s = 555 MW at 100% efficiency. Typical jet engines are actually about 30-35% efficient, so that's more like 166 MW, which converts to about 222,000 Hp.
and that's JUST the jet power, there's also a rocket on this thing that assists but it's hard to get any burn rate data on them because they're still developing it. But they say by the end it will produce 122 kN of thrust. So if you assume the same energy per pound of thrust as the jet engines (will actually be a bit higher because rocket fuel has a higher energy content than jet fuel) you're looking at about another 120,000 hp from the rocket. So VERY roughly estimating.... this thing has will have about the equivalent energy rate of 340,000 Hp preeeeeeeety sweet haha The thrust numbers are hard to pull Hp numbers from without knowing the distance they run, because thrust ENTIRELY depends on the nozzle shape and wether they have supersonic or subsonic exhaust speeds. If you know the distance of a run, and the average thrust over that distance, bam thrust x distance = work energy, divide by the time and that's the actual Hp of the thing which would be the equivalent of "at the wheels" hp numbers. lets say added together it's got 345 kN of thrust, they do a 10 km run at .44 km/s (1000 mph) that works out to 152 MW = ~ 200,000 Hp "at the wheels"
