I'll say this about the Volt, it may new technology but its far from the answer to alternate transportation everyone was hoping for. At best the Volt is what the next phase of what hybrid vehicles should be, albeit at a very high price. If saving money is your game your better off avoiding ANY hybrid or electrical vehicle because the markup for the powertrain offsets the fuel savings. Some people take this mean a vehicle is a failure as evidenced by the OP's obvious opinion. Keep in mind these powertrains cost more than a couple arms and legs if you will to develop and face nobody is going to sell product at a loss. Give it 20 years and I'll venture to guess electric cars will cost just as much as conventional gasoline powered cars and every gasoline powered car will be hybrids. Buy what you like, some people would say we waste money buying Camaros.

Developing a new platform costs and they are not counting on Joe average to buy a volt. This is a car for upper middle class and upper class people who want their car to be a symbol of their dedication to a future that doesn't depend on foreign oil. They are also supporting a cleaner world without rising sea levels.
GM made the decision to develop the Volt prior to getting any government money. The thing was basically ready for production before the bailout. nothing like revisionist history. The program was developed under the previous administration. Those that fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.

![]() I also don't agree with that article. The Volt is not an entry level econo box like the leaf and insight. Heck a nice Prius is $32k now day's and that's close to what the Volt will cost once you get all your rebates and it's so much more of a car. They never said it was going to be cheap in the 5+ year's of development. I think they should of also made a smaller cheaper model also at the same time so that everybody could afford and for people who are minimalists but that would give way too much power to the people so general motors had to stop that from happening. I hope GM cam adapt the Volt system into other car's in the GM line like some Buick's and crossover's. One can only hope GM is as smart as us little folks. I don't know why it takes GM 5+ year's to put on vehicle on the streets. They would do a lot better if they could do it in 18 months and supply the market with what they want and when they want it and then their design's would look more fresh and not like its almost do for an update. Oops, I'm getting off topic. |

Those cars will never sell in large numbers as long as
1. You can get 2 conventionally powered cars of similar power and size for the same money, and 2, the Chinese continue to embargo the rare earth metals needed to manufacture them.

This right here is exactly what I think GM should do. Offer a Volt with a 30 mile range battery that would cost less than the current model. That way the consumer can figure out what would fit them the best.

It's like when people shout out to me when I'm driving my V10 or my Hemi: "I bet it doesn't get great gas mileage!" F' it, I didn't buy it for the mileage... duh
Let someone else save the planet. I'm burning fossil fuels.

New technology is expensive, the first computer cost like 10k, and the first VRC's cost like 1500, so yea this might be a little expensive but minus the tax rebate, and its definitely affordable. |
