DSL sucks. Anyone know why?

I have DSL at my business and at home. I don't have a choice at the office, our building doesn't have cable run to it. But at home, I had DSL years ago and it would always go out when it rained. Switched to cable and for 3 years and other than a couple weeks after hurricane Ivan and Katrina I have never had a problem.

I went back to DSL at home to 'Bundle' my services and back to the same problem.

At home AND at the office, any time it rains the service goes out. Anyone know why this could be?

I use Yahoo Music to pipe through the office for clients to enjoy and when it goes out it really pisses me off.

bad phone lines... water gets on line and itll mess the signal up... or you have an alarm system that isnt filtered...or you have a bad filter on the dslam outside your house...thats the box that brings the phone lines into your house...it could also be interfearence from the modem being near power cables for the computer... theres a few reasons

Yep all those will do it. Cable rules and is faster too. Can you get phone from your cable provider.

yea i work for a phone company and install phones/dsl/tv all day everyday. The main problem i come across is usually something in the house(alarm is a big one) Call your service provider and tell them you want a 'POTS splitter' installed at the main panel at your house. What this does is takes the phone line/dsl signal coming into your house and splits the data from the voice. So with this splitter it will bypass your inside wiring and dedicate 1 jack in your place for internet/modem only. So really the modem will have a straight path outside and will increase the signal to noise ratio(SNR) Also yes, it does depend on the type of wiring into your place. Is it buried or aerial? Buried cables have waaayy less problems then aerial cables. It also depends on the speed of service you requested, how far you are from the office, noise on the line(in db's ideally less than 26), what type of internet port it is....ex: alcatel, stinger, 2+, nokia, dslam(the box that brings the lines into your house is called a NIB~network interface box~). I personally will never go with cable internet, the speeds vary depending on how many users in your area are using the internet as well. Cable is shared, DSL is dedicated.

The splitter was the solution for me. We had the same problem, except the DSL would go out any time, not just when it rained. We got one dedicated jack and haven't had a single signal dropout since.

edit: this also removes any requirement for filters on the other phones, alarm, etc. If you've got more than one computer, you can set up a wireless network .. that, however, is a whole 'nother issue with DSL.

ok the best I can explain is the house is arial. It actiualy does go out sometimes even if it isn't raining. At the office it is on a different line as the alarm system and at the house the alarm system isn't monitored. I appreciate the info and I will try some of the things you guys mentioned. I didn't know that cable shared bandwidth from other users. So DSL is actually better if it's working properly?

You guessed right.

http://www22.verizon.com/FiOSForHome...ess_entry.aspx Check Availability

At my old place i had a 20/5 connection for $60/mnth No amount of downloading/streaming/gaming on our 3 comps that used the connection could slow it down, and i tried. I actually sustained a 5.7MB/s download from the Apple site.

FIOS or bust pretty much sums it up.

Cant get it. Living with 6 mbit cable. it's way better than DSL.

The current order of digital supremecy:

1 Private Super Line (custom routes and devoted fiber, straight from the NOC)
2 FIOS
3 Cable
4 DSL
5 AirCards
6 SmartPhones
7 Dial-Up
8 Hotel "Internet" L O F'in L

Nope, no FiOS in my area. I think I'm gonna go back to cable at home. No choice at the office.

Another question. As I stated allready I stream music from the internet through the office and private salon rooms so there are no commercials and I can change the genre depending on who may be coming in.

I'm using Yahoo and paying for it. Is there a better place to stream music from?
