A shot gun with an 18.5 inch barrel , and pistol grip is a decent home defense weapon. I have a S&w M&P 45acp , S&W 38 stub nose revolver , and 1 shot gun. Those are the home defense weapons.

I'd say you missed the important points here.. your advocacy of keeping an unloaded weapon for self defense, and your inaccurate comparison of .22 rimfire bullets and shotgun slugs.
And, unless one is trained in house clearing, I'll stand by my statement regarding shotguns as preferred home defense weapons.

Thanks for your service.

If you're going to use .22 rimfire ammo I would HIGHLY recommend hollow point as they will fragment if they hit any hard surface. Only downside is that it is going to be a B!t#h for the doctor to get out those fragments from the intruder.

I still would NEVER use a .22 for home defense unless I lived in a building the size of the pentagon.

Those weren't MY points, but yes, I see what you mean Right now (till I can get my 1911) I have a semi-auto 22 rifle and a Swedish Mauser - both kept locked and loaded at all times

I got the super enhanced semi trigger. It's got a real light 1st stage, and super smooth 2nd. My bushy has the RR NM and that fells like a brick comPared to the geissele. I need a new upper for the bushmaster. Right now the 20 in hbar is a tank.

Home defense weapon (HDW) system is always a question that brings great debate. Several areas will be discussed with regards to:
  • Knock down power (Calibers)
  • Pentration capability
  • CQB- Close quarters
  • Intruder scare factor (Shotgun chambering)
These are all relevant concerns and things that should be considered, but many miss some key points:
  • Who will be using this firearm (Skill Level)
  • What type of structure/dwelling
  • Single occupant or entire family
  • Are there children within reach of HDW
The reason I bring these up, every situation presents different opinions of what might suit the enviroment as a "Better fit" when it comes to the HDW.

If the skill set and experience of the user is minimal to no experience, then I would recommend a simplistic firearm, one that presents minimal steps to use yet doesn't present much of an intimidation factor. You have to take into condieration that many people are scared of firearms mainly due to lack of exposure. Since approx: 80% of shooting firearms is purely mental and the other 20 skill set, that has to be taken into consideration. This would weigh in on the DA (Double Action) revolver side of HDW. Revolvers are very simplistic, anyone with minimal knowledge can grasp the overall concept that the DA revolver brings to the table. Simply load the prescribed amount of rounds, point and squeeze...

With the type of dwelling and family size, one has to think about the round they are going to use, whether it's a .380, .38, .357 on up to a .45 ACP... Penetration in an occupied residence can present several issues... If you have an intruder in your residence and you have no alternative but to result to deadly force, each time you squeeze the trigger and the round exits the muzzle, it has to go somewhere... In the process of going somewhere, how far it goes becomes the question.

Those not familiar with "Frangible Ammunition" really need to consider it's use with regards to home defense. Frangible rounds are designed, upon impact with a hard surface, to break apart reducing over penetration and ricochets.

Children present in the home? If you have kids, you have to consider safekeeping of your HDW, this will also play a role in weapon selection. Is it safer to store a revolver/pistol vs. shotgun next to your bed for easy access at night??? You have to make that call and it's something to consider with HDW selection...

Lastly, and this was touched on a little, the user plays the biggest role in HDW selection... The user has to be comfortable with whatever weapon system is choosen and more importantly, must become profficient in its use and application... This can not come from reading this or any forum... Most ranges will rent firearms... Go to the range with a selection in mind and try them out... Find the one that best fits "YOU" and keep you and your family safe...

Remember, We don't purchase HDW systems for "If" but rather "when" an intruder will attempt to harm you or your family...

Be prepared and be safe...

Man I wish we had ranges that rented guns around here! They had one right off base in Oceanside, called Iron Sites. Could rent just about any type of pistol you could think of and they had a decent selection of rifles as well, it was awesome! Maybe if I win the lottery I'll get one started here in Iowa

sounds like a plan to me.... I've often thought about doing the same. I can teach and I can do some gunsmithing. I'd like to go get certified in it, I've only done light work on mine and some friends guns... just trigger jobs, sights, scope mounting etc.

Yup. I mean, if they can have a range like that in CALIFORNIA, I'm pretty sure the other 49 states wouldn't be too difficult to get one started in
