Thumbs down Anti-Hobbyist Inoperable Vehicle Bill Introduced in AR; Hearing Scheduled for TODAY

http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=62873

Legislation (H.B. 1252) that would allow cities to remove inoperable vehicles from private property if the vehicle is deemed a “nuisance” under a local ordinance has been introduced in the Arkansas State Legislature. The bill will be considered by the Arkansas House Committee on City, County and Local Affairs on Wed., Feb. 2, 2011.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Arkansas House Committee on City, County and Local Affairs (List Attached Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 1252

For those interested in attending the hearing to voice opposition, the Committee will meet on Wed., Feb. 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the following address:

Room B, Mac Building
1 Capitol Mall
Little Rock, Arkansas 72201
  • H.B. 1252 provides no reasonable safeguards for legitimate automotive hobbyists that choose to work on inoperable collector vehicles on private property.

  • H.B. 1252 could outlaw the repair or modification of certain motor vehicles that are undergoing restoration.
  • H.B. 1252 could outlaw the maintenance of parts cars for motor vehicles undergoing restoration.
  • H.B. 1252 establishes no provisions that would enable vehicles located out of public view to avoid being classified as abandoned.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Arkansas House Committee on City, County and Local Affairs immediately to request their opposition to H.B. 1252.

Please e-mail a copy of your letters to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org

Well that sounds like a law just begging to be abused by nosy busybody neighbors who don't like car people.

Making sure you don't have some rusty shell sitting out in plain view of the street for years on end is one thing, but this seems to go well beyond that.

Essentially, if you have a parts car or a restoration project parked in your driveway that is deemed an eyesore by a passer-by or neighbor, the city can come and take it away.

That's asinine. Are people really becoming that egotistical to decide what's deemed "pretty" enough in their eyes?

Unfortunately, yes. While we understand that the sight of rusted out vehicles in a front yard with vegitation growing out of it may not be pleasant to the neighborhood, it also shouldn't outlaw someone from having a project or parts car on their own property. That's why SEMA has a common sense bill that says these types of vehicles can be on private property so long as they are obscured out of reasonable plain view (with shrubberty, trees, fencing, etc.).

Everyone, call these legislators. We have to protect our passion. Eventually, our new Camaros could be classified as a nuisance and towed away, too.

You're right. It is your property, but your neighbors are playing hardball. If they pass this law in Arkansas, it can spread to other states. As a community, we need to stand together and tell those legislators to vote down this bill. Once it becomes law, it is harder to repeal.

They need to pass a law to get the couches and washing machines off the front porch first.
