but realisticaly that's not going to happen. At least not for a first gun, and I'm pretty sure .50 is banned in Cali. + price is way out there for what I'm looking for.

The reason for getting one is just to learn to shoot, and I'll most likely be doing lots of target practice.
I've also been looking at M&P and glock.
My goal is something inexpensive that will be good to learn with. This isn;t something I plan on doing soon, I just want opinions so I can think about it some more. The goal is to purchase in the next 6-8 months.
I don't know if anyone commented in getting a .50AE in CA, but my friend used to work at DOJ, here, and it's not "banned". What happened, was it was never submitted by DE for validation, as-it-were. You can get a .44, and only need a .50 barrel and magazine and just swap the two when you're inclined.

I'm planning on doing just that. I plan on using the .44 just for home defense and .50 for flame throwing when I go shoot. They way I figure it - a criminal is likely to recognize that particular handgun pretty quickly, and it might even discourage them from continuing their course of action. If it's necessary to discharge the firearm, I think the .44 is more than enough, and even overkill. Shock and awe is my goal.

I've always wanted this gun since I first saw it in a magazine. No - it's not too practical, but it's being improved and the current Mark XIX is the best to date. I plan on loading my own rounds for the AE and the .44. Maybe I'll step up to their muzzle break, too eventually. $2K for what I'm thinking I'm wanting is a big chunk, though. I'm considering a S&W .500 mag, too. Those are legal, and several hundred bucks left.

Bigger is better, lol.

Really? So the round magazine then isn't the greatest? I was wondering if the tube was a better system or something and why not a lot of mfg has one out. My dad had a Mossberg 12 gage bolt action when I was a kid growing up, loud and one hell of a kick !! I've shot mostly 30.06 and handguns but for home protection I'm thinking a good 12g short barrel cant be beat. Can you get a short barrel for the moss?

depends on what you call short.... 18-1/2" is the shortest mossberg makes. Check this out though, this is the Mossberg 590 Special purpose model. 20" barrel and its a 9 shot

MSRP is around the $500-550 mark. I've seen them as low as $400 in some places.

9 shots should be enough for most intruders.. but and maybe I'm wrong about want a semi auto? When things get exciting I dont want to have an issue pumping it. Some times my hands dont cooperate..LOL and that would not be good if I need to shoot and couldnt.

I do appreciate the help, thank you very much

I've just always been a pump fan.... less moving parts, less to go wrong. Check out mossberg's 930 line.... basically a semi-auto version of the 500/590. Something like this....

both of those are 8 shot (7+1)

I'm guessing the 930 has a bunch of accessories too... I like the pistol grip. What are your thoughts on the SKS ? Keep it or trade it/sell it. Will it be a hassle to own one day ? Is it a trouble maker if I pull it out to do some target shooting. I've only ever hunted with it and sighted it while hunting...LOL.. Not wanting any law enforcement issues

a lot depends on where your using it and distances.... as you know, a shotgun has a limited range. A rifle is really not practical inside or in close quarters. Where I live, its heavily wooded and there's not a real long range shot I'd could take (50-60 yards max). I'd say keep the SKS unless you have to sell it... if they do put restrictions on them someday.... you already got one and don't have to worry about the hassles of buying another one

The 500/590/930 have a ton of accessories.... everything from flashlights, night/fiber optic sights, to even bayonets . I got a trueglo on the end of mine... works great

right on thank you, looks like I found my gun then. Home protection is the application, the other is just for target shooting I don't hunt anymore and to be honest don't get any time to target shoot either. But things are what they are in the world and more people are getting more desperate and doing stupid things so a person has to think about self defense now more than ever before it seems.

well, used to just shoot in some small local stuff.... not having my own handgun was kind of a pain in the arse..... always having to borrow one from someone, and every week it was a different caliber Thinking about picking up a S&W 1911 for competition. Just want a cheap steel framed but good quality, I plan on changing out a lot of the internals to make it more reliable and accurate.

Consider a used one. Lots of them around. Find one with a good trigger job and sights that you like, you'll be $ ahead.
