I didn't figure anyone got towed.

All I was saying, was just in case you do live there for extended periods of time, you're kind of playing with fire if you're messing with the management and not technically on the lease. That's the extent of my point. Stuff like this can escalate pretty quick depending on the temper of the people in apartment management.

Most apartment complexes I've had to deal with were pretty cool, but from what you've suggested, if your girlfriend is the one calling to pay for a second parking space and they're getting all anal, then it sounds like you're dealing with a bunch of prudes. And in that case, messing with them like that could easily escalate the situation.

When dealing with prudish or anal apartment management, I always enjoy seeing them get worked up, but seeing as how it's your girlfriend that lives there and not you, you could be causing a sticky situation. If you don't think it'll happen, then by all means, continue to play games with parking spaces. But don't say no one warned you

I think when people read: "few hours later, the car in 139 is gone," and "Few hours later, I see neither car there, and no letters" they assumed they got towed. Probably the owners just took off for the day or went and had a nice lil chat with the manager.

Hmmmm

Legally, and I have seen this, there has to be proof of attempted residency for them to get anything or to evict. He can stay with her for as long as he wants if she's paying the rent. Just so long as he doesn't get any bills for her place in his name. Nor can he receive a receipt for rent from her. But the time periods that someone can stay do not hold up in court.

Right, and a lot of lease agreements have a clause in there covering this, but it varies from apartment to apartment. But in all cases, you're correct, it's a pretty difficult issue to prove for apartment complexes.

Regardless, though, it can have side effects like trying to get any maintenance work done...

Best not to anger those in charge of your living space... which is why I have a house and not an apartment. No one to anger but myself

You guys better figure out the laws in your state, in NC the property owner or his representative can have your car towed if it is left there and does not belong. It is considered abandoned property and the driver does not have to be present.

*goes outside to check on his car*

Still there.
I've been doing the exact same thing, but I know who the parking spot belongs here, and they moved out last week. So they shouldn't bother me until someone moves in.

Been a while for us. But when we lived in a complex, we had our spots with no problem.

Same here (Houston, Tx). Each apartment has one assigned spot.

Pro: I always have a spot.
Con: Visitors have trouble finding an open visitor spot. Some tenants here are lazy and park in visitor spots.

It depends on the complex. Sometimes the property owner hires a dolt of an architect/engineer and they don't properly plan for something as simple as parking

Most cities have an ordinance that requires a minimum number of parking spaces for higher-density residential properties, and these minimums are usually what a lot of these engineers try to stick to. In practicality, though, it never makes sense.
