Tanning?

Who goes tanning here?

I've never done it, but thought about it. I hate te spray stuff, it looks gross on people.

Only because I'm starting a new diet/workout routine soon. I should be able to lose 30-40lbs in 4 months.

I go tanning before I take my two yearly trips out to Vegas. Just because I look too damn pasty. I can't stand that self spray tan it looks sooo gross on people when the stuff starts wearing off. I usually due though about 6 to 8 sessions when I go. I don't go to the tanning salon regulary. I will just show up about every 6 months. My mom had skin cancer about 9 years ago. She is still alive today but I'm not going to be a regular self baker

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, DON'T DO IT!!!

I was a serious sun-worshipper in my youth and almost paid for it with my LIFE!!!

I have had malignant melanoma TWICE...the first was in 1987 and the second in 2008, and that was after AVOIDING the sun or using SUNBLOCK and covering up for 21 yrs after the first melanoma...my risk never goes away

I just found out earlier tonight that I have yet another basal cell skin cancer on my face :(

I've had 4 biopsies on my face since September...3 of the 4 are cancer...
I had surgery for the 1st one in October and surgery for the 2nd one only 3 weeks ago...now I have to have another one

I've already had 2 previous surgeries on my face in 2006 and 2008 for basal cell skin cancer...and remember the melanoma surgery, also in 2008 :(

I am paying dearly NOW for all the sun exposure I had THEN, when I was young and stupid and thought I was invincible

BTW, even though I have fair skin, I always got a really dark tan

When I was 1st diagnosed with melanoma in 1987, the risk was 1 in 150 people getting this deadly, and sometimes fatal, cancer...today that risk is about 1 in 50, thanks to the depleting of the ozone layer, year by year

If I can save just ONE person from the HELL I have gone through, then it was not in vain...no one wants to go through this just to look tan

Save yourself, and save your skin....you will look younger and have almost no wrinkles if you are careful in the sun

Take it from me...I have been smart about the sun and I am still 'reaping what I sowed' back in those days...the damage is already done...all I can do is try to avoid causing more cancer by sunbathing now

At least my skin is not all wrinkled up like a prune like so many of my friends that still sunbathe are

I am 55 yrs old in the following photo that was taken last year when we picked up the HWAY STR...most people think I am 10-15 yrs younger than I am, thanks to sun avoidance

The 2nd photo is me, in my 20s with my never-ending dark tan

Not trying to lecture you, but you did want advice, so take it or leave it, the choice is up to you

Good luck!!!...I do care, and that is why I am sharing my horror story with you, and the rest of C5

I love tanning. It's relaxing, just don't do it excessively....

A tanning bed, no... I do abuse with the sunshine, fishing as often as I can and maintaining a pool year round is enough exposure for me.

Great advice Donna

Problem is only during recent years have we been able to track which direction sun / solor flares are going.

That's where folks get cancer when they are in the sun 24/7, they have no clue when the solor radation is 1000 of times over normal. Which you can't see or feel. Though time is not in your favor the more you are outside.

Never done it, doubt I ever will. My tan comes from the beach or the pool.

Cancer?

Getting sciencey for a minute here. Tanning beds are UV-A rays only, which is what let's you tan. However it is the UV-B rays that burn you. When you get sun burn it is your body protecting itself from the harmful rays of the sun. Why people willingly choose to destroy their bodies with radiation I do not know.

AMEN to that...
I wish I had been smarter in my youth, but then again, we always think we 'know it all' when we are young and foolish and think we know everything, and our parents know nothing...
My mom tried to warn me, because she was just starting to deal with skin cancer on her face...know what I told her, "Mom, by the time I'm old enough to get skin cancer or wrinkles, there will be a cure"...
I really wish I had listened to my mom then...who knew that only 10 yrs after I made that stupid remark, I would almost die from malignant melanoma...
That's why I am trying to be the 'mom' here, to tell you guys to be careful of the sun!!!

This time of year I don't worry about it and when I want a tan I've just been using a bronzing body lotion,
works great and no one can tell!
