Electricity will always be used to drive the Volt (though the same thing can be said for most hybrids). When the batteries are low, and the load is high (such as high speed or up hill driving) the gasoline engine will assist the electric drive. That is why I refuse to call the Volt an EV, because its really a kickass hybrid.

Thanks for your answer.
Anytime!! It really is better than before, like DG says:

I'd love to have a Volt as a commuter car for college! Or even for work!
Unfortunately, I don't love the predicted $40,000 price tag. I guess I was just born a few years too early~
I'll definitely pick one up in a few years though, once the first generation has had its cycle.

Maybe the EPA will have to come up with a universal average user profile, and then rate vehicles on a cost per year basis. Since the goal is to compare apples to apples, this number would work on any car. Since the Leaf can't do long trips, figure in the cost of renting a car for the profile. The biggest hurdle for EV's is how states will get their road taxes, can we expect gas taxes to be replaced with mileage taxes that you pay with your liscense fees?

That's fine.. because U can just lease it for $350 a month after a $2500 sign in lease. $350 is less than U would pay for a Malibu, Fusion, or Accord monthly. And in reality, why would anyone want to BUY a brand new tech like this when GM has stated several times that they are already testing VOLTEC II?

That's a good question. Once electric cars get more popular, road taxes have to raised somewhere. Either your electric rates are going to go up, or some other form of tax will be collected. There's no free lunch.

Hopefully the user manual discusses Stabil cause if 75% of Americans can exist
almost all the time on electric, the gas sitting in that reserve tank is going to get
mighty old, haha.

How cool would it be if you sold the car 30 years from now and it still had the original tank of gas in it from the dealership?

Thats one of the reasons that they recommend premium gas, its supposed to last a bit longer.

You'd have to never drive the car for that to happen, and if so ... the same could be said for any car. The engine in the Volt is programmed to use a little bit of gas every now and then, I think its about a tank over the course of a year. This is to keep the seals conditioned, stir up the gas, and address other issues that arise from an engine not running for extended periods of time. But of course, if you regularly use the gas engine it doesn't have to take care of itself.
