Chevy runs deep?

What happened to them only using "Chevrolet"?

They realized fairly quickly they were stupid to even think about it, and decided to keep with what got them a beloved American icon.

Old advertising agency came up with that I think.

The two ideas are actually related. See, 'Chevy' does indeed run deep ... in the US. Everybody in North America automatically equates Chevy to Chevrolet without thinking. But this isn't the case around the world where many buyers have never had a car before, and certainly not a Chevrolet, and they've never heard of Chevy. So trying to sell Chevrolets in those markets, while advertising Chevy, leads to obvious confusion. Particularly when there are brands like 'Chery' which sounds an awful lot like 'Chevy' to someone in China. To my knowledge, there is nothing out there that sounds like 'Chevrolet'

In South Africa, they (the locals, not GM) have shortened it to Chev. As in, "That oke's driving a Chev."

I'm fairly sure the guy who started Chery worked for GM...and stole designs for one of their minicars. They copied it so well that you could pull a door off the Chevrolet and install it on the Chery and it fit perfectly.

Hey, gotta find a cheap source of parts cars for the US market somehow.

That memo was directed towards emerging markets, and more specifically targeted official literature...

Chevy runs deep, indeed.

It wasn't one guy. The design was stolen by the local Chinese government after they tried to get the licenses from Daewoo right before GM bought Daewoo outright in 2002. After GM nixed the idea, Chery went ahead with the Matiz and Magnus rip offs. GM let it slide, since Chery is government owned and needs the goodwill in China. But, Chery is also smart enough to not try importing them into the US and EU. The good new is that the Matiz has long since evolved to the Spark on the GM side and is lo longer the same car. In markets where they compete, the Spark is a MUCH better car and MUCH better value for money.

Actually, every one calls it that: the blacks, the coloreds, the indians, and both white groups. Everyone here speaks at least 2, if not 3 or 4 languages; English being one of them. And Bra is a SoCal thing. Here they say, Boet.

But Dragoneye is right, the push into some markets has led to a renewed focus on the Chevrolet brand, and using Chevy just confuses people.
