Emissions and fuel economy were the problems, then, as well as lack of torque. A serious program was undertaken for the Corvette in the early '70s with Wankel power but, again, the problems outweighed the benefits. Of all the companies who tried the Wankel, the only long-term success was found by Mazda. NSU (now Audi) brought a rotary to market, as well: the Ro80.

I do love the concept of a rotary engine.

I knew they dabbled in rotary's but I didn't know what, if anything, had resulted from their attempts.

Having just transitioned from a 3rd gen RX7, I can say I don't miss the lack of torque! But the rotary is an awesome feat of technology and once it is breathed upon with twin turbos as the 3rd gen is, it is a wicked performer.

Still no regrets in getting the Camaro and the supercharger helps make up for the weight!

From a road racing standpoint, there is nothing better than a turbo rotary. Plain and simple, they make more power in a smaller package than any piston engine. They are, however, terrible for street cars. There's a reason they were banned from nearly every form of professional road racing.

Not so much "banned" as given extreme weight penalties that made competing in them fruitless.... There is just no anymore...
