I've been a microwave antenna design engineer and most recently (till I was laid off, a Field Engineer for Eastman Kodak). I serviced/maintained/installed large industrial high speed laser printers. Now I'm back in school working on a second degree - this time in accounting. (I must have lost my mind!)

Hasn't string theory been largely discarded, and is not astrophysics now looking at "branes" as a way of uniting the Four Forces in a multiverse?

To my understanding, membranes (aka "branes") are a part of M-theory, which is a unification of previous string theories.
