Cortisone injections

Does any one here get cortisone injections? I get about 3 injections into my shoulder a year to help with an injury from about 4-5 years ago, had a torn rotator cuff; had surgery to correct the problem, then a year later had a 2nd surgery to remove inflammation in the same shoulder.

Anyway, a good friend was telling me how bad it is to get these injection since over time the cortisone will eventually eat way the tissue in the shoulder muscle. Had anyone ever heard of this? I already take enough oxycodone for those bad days and when the shots starts to wear off and would hate to have to up my dose of pain killers if the injections will lead to future problems.

Again, I know you all aren't doctors, just seeing if anyone has any input or long term use.

I'm a medical student, but I am in no way a doctor yet. I'll attemp to answer your question:

Cortisone can eat away the muscle (called muscular atrophy) but this is a VERY rare side effect that occurs with prolonged (daily) use. Since you only receive the injection 3 times a year, you shouldn't have any problems. The next time you visit your doctor let him know your concerns; he should give you more information pertaining specifically to you!

I always heard Cortizone was bad long term. Maybe something has changed in the passed 17 years. But I tore my shoulder up doing incline bench presses with 225 lbs. No spotter is what did it. Had to lift the bar from behind me and then rotate it forward then start the reps.

The cortizone shot DEFINITELY worked. But be VERY aware that it masks the injury pain, and if you don't take it easy, you'll do more damage. I did. PISSED my orthopedic doctor off. He basicaly told me that if I don't listen to him, he can't help me. And he showed me the door. lol

See any of that new physical therapy study stuff???

Said that in the past when you got hurt, they would work the injured area but a new study shows that folks heal quicker if you put the focus of physical therapy on the un-injured side.

Like you hurt your right shoulder, well if they focus the therapy on your left shoulder instead, your right heals quicker...........

My doctor thought a cortizone shot may help with my neck problem, but he called it a double edge sword. Yes it may help, but it may also be a short term solution with side effects that are worse than the original problem. See PQ's post above, #11.
