2009 Silverado Issue

My Silverado isn't working well. I took it in for an oil change last Thursday. Friday evening, we went to a friend's in another town (45 mile drive) and my wife mentioned that the truck had developed a "squeek". Sure enough, I noticed it and the farther we went, the louder it got. At first, it almost sounded like the wear indicators on the brakes, but then as we were sitting at a light, it was still making the noise. When we got to my friend's, I popped the hood and was checking to see if maybe one of the pullies wasn't the culprit. Alas, everything appeared lined up correctly and the belt wasn't slipping. I finally got a chance to drive it back to the Chevy dealer today and told the service manager about the problem.

45 minutes later, he calls me back out to the service bay and tells me that essentially it's a "known defect" in the 6 speed tranny. He tells me that there's a pump that was designed to allow the tranny to heat up quicker (news to me) and that it had gone out but that it shouldn't cause me any problems to drive it anyway until they can order the parts and get me back in to drop my tranny and fix the issue. I ask him if it's going to "grenade" on me on the interstate and he says no, the worst it would do would be to make me have to walk a bit. I then tell him that my wife is the primary driver with our 2 month old in the back seat and that that would be unacceptable. He then tells me he'll get the parts as soon as possible and call me to schedule the fix.

We'd just ride in to work together in the Camaro, but my wife and I are both 6 feet tall +. The rear-facing infant seat requires the front seat to be pushed all the way forward, so my wife obviously doesn't fit.

If you've got a Silverado 1500 with the 6 speed auto in it and you start to hear a chirping sound at idle and cruise, you definitely want to go get it checked out.
