The question is not if it will sell -- it will. The question is "how well will it sell", and does it justify spending money on development over something that will probably make more of a return?

(I haven't seen it, but I've been told) that research indicates the American auto market does not support the hatchback-style well at all.

I think the preference, when given a choice, is something like:
  1. Sedan
  2. Coupe
  3. Hatch/wagon

Not a fan of hatchbacks myself (unless you consider gen 4 to be a hatch) so I see where you're coming from, but if cars like CR-Z and GTI can move enough units to retain their production rights, why not Cruze? Granted, of course that the Cruze hatch would be competing against the original. I'm sure that cuts its chances in half at least.

But for those cars there isn't a sedan to choose against.

Midsize cars are loosing V6's soon, so they're never coming back to compacts.
