I disagree with the final "surprised?" in the commercial. I stirs too many memories of the past. They need to distance themselves from the past, not remind us of it!

My dad's '93 Saturn SW2 was a plastic rattlebucket. While it lasted forever, I was appalled at the interior quality. My '98 Sonoma's interior is no better, hard plastic all over the dash. Luckily, we maintain our cars very well, so they last quite a long time. Other Americans...not so much. There are plenty of people who have told me that they will never own another GM product after what they went through in the 80s and 90s. It is REALLY hard to get them into a GM showroom again, but every time they do, they're extremely surprised by what they see.

The new ad campaigns and new products are definitely changing some perspectives...

The adds are aimed at the brainwashed American public that thinks the rice burners are so superior to the American cars and it just isn't so any more.

If everyone would buy American this country wouldn't be in half the mess it is now.

I can see the OPs point. Yes they're trying to counter the prejudices and false impressions people have of them, but at the same time they're also in a way reinforcing and validating those positions. Risky move.

They're not saying that 5 series guys are gonna turn around and buy a G8. It's making the point that the G8 is a waaaay better value than the 5. More power and more size than the 5 series at HALF the price. I think it's effective. It makes people feel good about their purchase.

(By the way, the G8 vs. 5 series commercial was created well before the financial crisis took hold).

There isn't even a whole lot of proof that the 8 vs. 5 commercials were made by GM...

If you remember the CNBC special they had "saving GM" Bob Lutz said something to the effect "The quality gap only remains in the public awareness, in reality, it's gone." This seems to be what the ads are all about, changing the public awareness.

I hope/think they have a plan for these. I'm guessing they'll run these for a while. Once people get over the "surprise" they'll start "assuming" people know that GM has higher quality. "DUH, everbody knows GM has higher quality." Not a bad idea if you ask me.

I think it's acknowledging the public's perception of their vehicles, and directly challenging them. "That's right, it's this good and WE made it. Surprised?" I can't see anything negative in them...

They seem similar to Ford's "Have you driven a Ford lately" commercials. I actually laughed the first time I saw one (the Malibu one). "...surprised?" It's snarky and mildly in-your-face...not something an old dinosaur of a company would think of.

It was either this commercial or Rick Waggoner buying discount shoes with Jerry Seinfeld and eating a toblerone and adjusting his underpants.

I guess the people that already bought a G8...but you aren't going to convince ANYONE who wants a 5 series to settle for a G8. Especially by pointing out it gets one mile of gas more a gallon. They aren't sure who to market the G8 too now and with the Camaro coming out they're running out of options. Now suddenly the G8 is comparable to a BMW? Come on GM...
