... any chance you see a blue screen error the instant that it 'shut off' and rebooted on ya?

as for the lockups, I'd initially say it was overheating, but it could be driver issues, too

what OS, Video card, etc?

If you havent already, take the side panels off and leave them off and see if that helps the freezing-- if it was overheating, this should help pinpoint that.

If you're using these computers for work (SOHO) and have a network setup, I would suggest getting two network hard drives. One for all your programs and files and the other one to back-up the first one. Then when you rebuild a computer you have all your programs in one place for a easy rebuild and two you can have map drives to all your files.

I work in IT and support over 500 computers in my facility and know how time consuming it is constantly rebuilding machines.

8-10 years, your computers must not be exposed to the internet!!!

Good luck on getting your machine back up and running.

Thanks for the advice! I am in the middle of doing just that. My business has grown to the point where the computer system is beyond the scope of what I know. I have someone getting me on the right track now at work. I should say this computer I'm having problems with is my home computer ,but I use it to do business type work at home. I'm sure they will get it fixed or replaced. It's just upsetting to spend so much on a high end computer and have problems like this. I will say it's awesome when it does work.

For work or a business you may want to look into the Dell lease program.

Why they are so big in business.

For home use, build it yourself.

I never had an issue with Dell when I ordered my laptop through them about 2-3 years ago. It came with a 3 year warranty and everything else. I only used it for my deployment to Iraq and ended up selling it to a teacher in the local area since I had no use for it when I came back.

They thought it was overheating at first. So they sent out a guy to replace all the cooling fans, the motorboard, the power supply and wiring harness , and the video card. They gave him a new hard drive also ,but he didn't replace that or the processor. Everything else is replaced.

It's an I7 960, with 12gb ram, 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, ata hd5870 vid card
running on window 7 64bit.

You can find that problem all over the web, I had that problem not long ago.
Its caused by a bad power supply.

That makes sense because that problem didn't show up until he came out and replaced the power supply on tuesday.

And it just did it again. That's why it took my so long to replied to the post above.

My friends dell has lost it's screen twice already. Their quality isn't what it used to be. Build your own for best results. You may pay a little more but everything is top notch and with a real warranty.

I'm Sorta stuck with this thing now. I just hope they get it taken care of.

I believe I could assemble a computer ,but setting it up from scratch would be a different sorry for me.

New or newer parts arent always good parts.

if you know what your doing just a little, its not that hard at all, like doing spark plug wires, cept you can't mix up what plugs in where, just only do one connection at a time, and take notes if you need too. Id just go pick up a new PS on your own and replace it then wait for a paid flunky still in school.

hehehehe

True, I have now doubt that I can change a power supply. I have over 20 years experience in the mechanical trades. I just think for that kind of money they need to make it right. The warranty is partly why they're so expensive.

But, then again they might screw something else up.

Anyhow this thread has helped to calm me down. Thanks

It's really easy to do, but like you said they got your money so your hands are tied. Hopefully it gets sorted out for you.

Motorhead,
if you were closer, I could help. I had to take the tests for work, and I'm certified on Dell systems. I can order the replacement parts and get them replaced.

If you wanted to talk smack about a system or a company, I'm all for throwing gasoline on a Lenovo system! The amount of frustration the sales rep gave me over the last system I ordered really speaks volumes.

In fact I've saved the condescending messages from the sales rep to persuede people not to buy.

The fact that you can order a laptop from them without wireless, and the fact that the cards they used are chipped so you can't buy from anyone other than them is horrible. $85 for a fricking wireless card. I found out the hard way, you can't buy the kind of card they use, but need to buy the chipped one. What's the difference if I get an Intel centrino N 6200 wireless card from Govconnection or a Lenovo parts supplier? Well about $55.
