Way to Make GM Sale go UP!!

GM should double their warranties. Be like Acura, BMW and the high end. Offer a 6 year 72,000 Mile Standard bumper to bumper warranty. I would do that and drop the 5 year 100,000 mile drivetrian warranty.

That would show that GM stands behind their product and would continue to improve quality since they do want to have to do warranty work. I think this would have people buying GM product over the imports.

What do you guys think?

This might help a little, but the problem isn't that GM doesn't have market share. The problem is that the whole market shrank. Your strategy would be a good way to steal some market share from companies that don't offer long warranties or reliable cars. Chrysler did this with some success with the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. While this would improve GM sales a little, it wouldn't boost the entire market. When the market gets better, however, this would be a winning solution.

I'm sorry, I don't completely understand. Are you suggesting the 6/72 warranty is better than GM's current 5/100? If so, for me anyways, I prefer the 5/100 because I'm more likely to put a lot of miles on my car than keep it for a longer duration. I don't know if my salesman's number were correct, but he stated, at least in California, that on average we keep our cars 27 months before jumping into another car. That was true for my family for a while, so I didn't not believe him, but that was four years ago, so it's probably changed. Anyhoo, as long as they can keep the warranty period comparable to competitors, I agree that they'll be competitive.

I would have prefered 7 years /70K mile warranty but the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty is pretty cool too..

Sure its just engine and drivetrain...but its still pretty reassuring..

I drive about 11k miles a year so the 7 year /70K miles would have been a little better for my usage...yet the 5 year /100 K is cool too.

Who knows maybe my mileage per year will go up?

the average person in the USA drives 12 K miles per year....

So GM gets the perception of quality products offering 5 year /100 K mile warranty...and yet the average car will only have 60K miles on it at the end of 5 years ..

GM's warranty costs should be at a lower cost with the 5 year term limit for the most part compared to a 7 year/70k mile limit that Chrysler used to offer..

I think Chrysler offers a lifetime warranty now a days but who knows if they will even be in business in 5 years....and I don't think it covers the viper or the SRT products....

I always thought it would be nice to have an ultra-competitive 7 or 10 years/100,000 miles. I'm the kinda driver who hits the time limit first, so it never really worked out for me. My last vehicle was 13 years old and only had 80,000 miles.

But I can't complain about this one; being fully transferable and all.

I can't see offering less than 100,000 miles, for me the 7 years is not a factor, My HHR is a little over a year and a half old with 35,000 on it...
my Sky is a little over a year and has 21,000 on it.. 20 years and 1,000,000 miles would be better LOL

Most SLIGHTLY used 2008's get GM certified, and wind up with a 4 year / 48 month bumper to bumper warranty from the original in service date....

Goes to show you the quality is there!

Well said JBsC6 and well thoght out by GM. They have the percieved 100k warranty but it really expires after 5 years.

It's no way "percieved" they tell you up front it is 5 years OR 100,000 miles whichever comes first. That is usually how all warranties work, just as the basic bumper to bumper warrenty is 3 years OR 36,000 miles whichever comes first.

Not as many people are buying brand new cars right now. All auto makers are reporting sales lower than what they were last year. It's not just GM. The market for new cars just isn't there.
