never ceases to amaze me. I grew up attending Catholic schools right from kindergarten to nearly finishing high school. (attended a public school for my last year and a half of HS because we moved) I have to say... the public schools were safer, which was surprising. I'm not sure if it's just a different level of behaviour in Canada or what (i doubt it) but I saw some crazy stuff in those catholic schools. From a guy doing coke rails off the bathroom counter, to what can only be described as an abnormally high teen pregnancy rate. Had my life threatened on multiple occasions as well.
public school, not so much. I saw one fight in the cafeteria one day where one guy used a chair... and the other guy had a board with a nail in it haha (they were tackled by teachers before any serious injury occurred) but aside from that, never had any issues beyond the average emotional teenager saga. I have (and always did really) tremendous respect for teachers. There is no way I would be able to do what you do. From the sounds of it, you're approching it calmly and rationally, which would not be the case if I were in your place. Hopefully he's all talk, but he also needs to learn you can't talk like that either. Just keep everything documented and hopefully that's the worst you'll have to deal with. One thing is certain however, DO NOT stop driving your car. Don't ever give someone the power to take away precious things in your life through intimidation. Panels can be re-painted, tires can be replaced, there is no substitute for the joys of driving the Camaro! Good luck!

Keep it greasy...No, it would not be the kid's a** or the parent's wallet. Some slimeball lawyer would claim she incited him by driving a great car. Then she insulted his self-esteem by implying he had done something wrong. Then they would have found that there was some sort of psychobable disease he suffered from, that of course was not properly diagnosed by the teacher or school. It is all their fault for not understanding the poor, suffering child. It is always the teacher's fault for not properly motivating the child to succeed. The 40% average came about because the teacher did not sufficiently alter her teaching methods to comply with the learning methods of each of the children. Therefore, the teacher should immediately hand over the keys to her socially inapproriate mode of transportation to compensate the young man for his feelings of inadequacy brought about by the many transgressions of the teacher.

Sir, I feel your pain. Over the last couple years I have learned in great detail what teachers go though. Not just dealing with the kids, but also having a job you always take home and never get any respect for (mostly because everyone incorrectly believes they can do it just as well). My fiancee is a middle school teacher so I completely understand the position you have been put in.
You are bound by laws that restrict the actions you can make. Here is what I would do in your situation (and as far as I know this doesn't break any of the laws/rules you are held to): 1. My advice is to file whatever paperwork/report is necessary with the administration of your school so they have a record of exactly what has happened. I assume they will also document any report made to the kid's parents. 2. I would also file a report with the police department about the threat that has been made to your property. I doubt that anything will happen as a result of the report at this point, but if any damage comes to your car...having that report on file with the police should help your case. 3. Park your car in the area of the parking lot with the cameras as you described with the hopes of catching any vandalism on tape. 4. Take pictures of your car. I would photo document your car in great detail as it sits right now. Make note of any damage that it currently has in the pictures. Take photos to show exactly what the current condition of the vehicle is. That way, if anything happens...you have before and after pictures. 5. Finally, continue to drive your car to work as if nothing has happened. Don't let him think he has won. You have done everything you can do to protect yourself. If anything should happen to your vehicle at this point, you should be fine. |

I work with a child and adolescent population in an acute mental health hospital. While I wouldnt advocate the kid get hauled off to jail, I would think that a trip to the emergency room for a psych. eval. would be in order. Arizona tolerance seems really high. In Georgia, we had a kid suspended from school because he was an artist and a history buff. He drew a picture of a flint lock rifle on piece of paper. He was 11 with no prior history of any problems or discplinary action.

Wow---what a difference a day makes.
The student has been removed from my classroom for a few days. Hopefully this will give him some time to think about his actions and how they are affecting his future. The goal is that after his brief timeout, things will improve. I am hopeful, I have to be---I’m a Cubs fan and that is how we are made. We always believe that it will get better. That doesn’t mean that I am a push over, if it doesn’t get better, I will move to the next step of the discipline plan. But that isn’t the good news of the day; the good news is how wonderful everyone is. I have never met any of you in person. However, I got home from work about ½ hour ago and like always, I checked my facebook page and then I came to the forum to see what’s up. I have so many PM’s from you guys is it amazing. They are all so positive and supportive. Many of you are educators, or know an educator, or appreciate a teacher that you had in the past. To know that so many people care about the well-being of someone else that they have never met in person, shows me that the world is full of wonderful people. Sometimes we think the world is falling apart, but that is because we watch the news and let the one or two negative people we come across taint our view of the world. Those negative people are the minority, and you proved that to me with all of the outpouring of well-wishes and support. Thank you. And I know you also care about Bumblebee, so I’ll let you know that he is fine. The security that walk the perimeter of the building during the school day, have been told to keep an eye on him. They were so funny when they said they already do. They told me that the best part of their day is when they are assigned to that side of the building because they get to enjoy the view.

Since this kid sounds like a real "winner", most of the kids in the school probably hate his guts. SO...
If anything does happen to your ride, he'll probably get an a** whuppin' from one or more of the students you teach. Doesn't matter how big you are, there's always someone bigger who will make you their b***h. If this kid gets hauled away, make sure you tell him to kiss his boyfriend for you. Then again, I blame the stinking liberals for "reasoning" with children instead of spanking them. |

i hate having to deal with punks like this for 5 days an week for over 9months an yr.
I would say defintly an eye on your car/property, try to park were the school cameras are, and take some good pics of your car so incase if anything happens you have more proof that there was no damage previously.

Kids just want attention, he's obviously not getting it at home so he's going to do whatever he can to get it at school. IE being the class clown.
I've delt with kids like this before and the best thing to do for him is to show that you care. They'll be little shits at first but they'll eventually come around. It's not your job to disciple kids however it is your job to be a resource for a positive role model while they are at school. Granted if a student threatened my car I'd be scared shitless but you can't let him know that. The best thing to do is to defuse the situation, tell him "I wouldn't mess with it, it will Transform and step on you". Who cares if its stupid. I know it's super hard but that's one of the joys of being an educator. Some kids you just have to relate to on a different level. If your car matters more than the kids you shouldn't be teaching, if it doesn't you should check out a book called, "Star Teachers: the Ideology and Best Practice of Effective Teachers of Diverse Children and Youth in Poverty".

Mcarney...So we should all prostrate ourselves before the smart mouth SOB's or have another smart mouth SOB try and say that if we don't we should not teach? Sounds like we found the source of the problem.
