Have you found a breed you like? There are rescue groups for just about every breed, people give up for one reason or another. I'm all about giving homeless shelter mutts a home, but purebreds can be homeless too.

Dogs all the way. With dogs, there is actually a chance they might want to be around you between feeding times.

Being Combat Service Disabled Veteran and after years on a waiting list, I finally got Catherine, a service dog about 2 months ago!

That is one thing that sucks about the dogs. You KNOW they need your care. You have to let them out and take them on walks and feed them etc. When we had the 1 cat in college, you could put out extra food/water and leave for 3-4 days (or more) and he was still fine when we got home.
