Need advice first oil change

I'm at 1200 miles and want to try to tackle my first oil change. I have done oil changes before just not in the last 15 years lol. I pretty much narrowed it down on which oil to use, its either pennzoil platinum synthetic, or mobil 1 5w-30, any preferences to which one, and why. What I'm not sure is what oil filter to use. I plan on changing my oil at every 4-5k miles, I've looked at fram extended, mobil 1, and k&n filters, but I have no idea, any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

royal purple ,redline, amsoil are the best or use what it came with mobil 1 on sale at wallmart $21.00 for 5 qt's, any good filter will work if you change your oil at 5000 mi.

As often as oil changes roll around I use the mobil one and I use mobil one oil filters, believe the part number is M1-113.

Cheers

That's correct. I use mobil 1 and this oil filter too. No problems. At about 1000 miles when I changed my oil I had fine metallic particles from engine break in in the oil. I bought 2 5 quart bottles of mobile one and had an extra quart bottle laying in the shed. I drained the oil and flushed about 2-3 more quarts of fresh oil through to pull out residual flakes. Next oil change they were all gone.

Why are you changing the oil so soon when the car still is not broken in? New cars, an bikes, have special additives in the oil that it comes with. This helps with brake in and bonding of the motor. Changing your oil out before the manufacture suggest is a bad idea later down the road. Even if there wasn't any added in, there is no need to do a wasteful oil change. It would give nothing for a gain. GM spent a lot of money on researching these motors, I think they know what they are doing. But bottom line, is the additives they first put into the new motor needs to stay in there longer.

THAT my friend is good advice....1000 is too soon on a new motor. AMSOIL is the best TRUE SYNTHETIC on the market. Look into it. According to people that should know Royal Purple doesn't have the additives you need for the street...it's a racing oil.

Through my endless research and such I have deducted it down to the following. This is just a generalization.

The absolute best, cost is not a factor: Redline

GM loyalists: Mobile 1

Ricers: Royal Purple

The last two would be Penzoil Ultra and Amsoil. Everyone and their mother swears by Amsoil. I used to never want to touch anything associated to Penzoil. After reading some data/tests, I run Penzoil Ultra. It is my opinion it performs better, and it can be bought in your local wal-mart (fairly surprising, advance auto or autozone do not carry it though).

Oil filter, I stick with mobil 1. Some people like the K&N one. Just don't run a FRAN. they are horrid.

How do you compare to Amsoil?
A study by North Carolina State university showed that Royal Purple improved fuel economy and reduced emissions when compared to Amsoil. Numerous independent users have also reported performance improvements when upgrading to Royal Purple. It’s important to note that any lubricant manufacturer can point to specific lab tests in which their products excel as evidence of product quality. Royal Purple products excel where it matters, in real world applications.

I used Mobil 1 5W-30, just like it came from the factory. The oil filter was replaced with AC Delco's PF48, again, same as OEM. Where I shopped, I only had a choice between two brands: AC Delco, and FRAM. The choice was clear. Since you plan to change your oil every 4k-5k miles, you don't need to worry about spending a fortune on an oil filter. Just don't go ultra cheap and you will be fine.

Some folks run their synthetics up to 10k-12k mile intervals, and so would need a premium filter to last the distance.

If my engine blows up before 20,000 miles because I used Mobil 1 instead of Amsoil or Royal Purple, then the problem lies beyond the oil.

I took mine to the dealer at 500mi and at 1500mi and I will bring it back at 3000mi for factory Mobil One oil changes. Then every 3000mi from there on. Thats just me. After 1500mi drive it like you stole it. The first oil change is the most important to me because there could still be shavings and bits of gaskets and sealer still in the oil and I like to get that oil out. After that Amsoil, Royal Purple or Mobil One and a good Filter.

This post makes the most sense to me.
