Chevy!! They have a $6000 rebate right now. I still have my 1st Chevy pickup. 86 with 250k miles. I've had very few problems with it in the past 24 years.

I take it the Ram you drove was a PRE 09 model?

i would say chevy or the gm. do not know the actual difference in the two, now if he does not car about the bed size chevy is a good one.

i know my dad was also in stores for a truck so we did some reviews of other trucks, and i found that toyota's tundra was the best bang for your buck, until i heard the frame bends under heavy loads. thats what i was told and never looked it up, also we go with the bigger engine to not standard.

ok i know i went of there for a bit. but what features would he want and or like? that i think also makes a difference to.

I would say get the Silverado. All 3 are good quality vehicles. Top of the line models, the Chevy will be the least expensive....mid-grades, the prices will be closer.....for the needs you mention, all three will be more than capable, so look at other factors.

With the initial cost likely being close, the capabilities being close, quality, build, etc are all fairly equal....so, you have to look at other factors....resale value and insurance costs come to mind.

It has been true for a long time that Silverados hold their value better, longer than either of the other two....now, with the new designs from Ford and Dodge, that gap may have closed a bit, but for now, the Chevy holds its value best.

Insurance can vary, so look into it.

Good luck.

^ That's what I hear and see a from all the owner's I know that tow heavy rockcrawlers with them. The Ram is a good STRONG truck that can take a beating without the wheel bearings, ball joints, transmissions problems plagues by other trucks at 100-120k of typical truck use. I see alot of 99-06 GM 1/2 tons and they are beat to hell and have a ton of problems and generally ride and feel like crap after 100k. I live in snow country northern California and guys up here work there trucks and run larger tires and the GM's simply dont last under these conditions and fall apart after 120k. Just go test drive a used 01 4wd Silverado on larger tires and you will see what I mean. I'm not sure if they fixed all thoes problems with the newer ones but if he has his heart set on a GM then search for any future change's because the current model is stale and behind the ball. If your gonna spend the extra $$$ on a brand new 2011 it might as well look like a brand new model instead of one nearing the end of its life span. The rear seats even in a GM crew cab is the worst of every crew cab 1/2 ton ive sat in especially in dark cloth, ewww get me out of here sort of cramped feeling, way too small for their largest cab model. I'm sure the next gen of GM truck's will be great if you want to wait. I have nothing to say about the F150 other then Ford has their act together and is building some of the best new domestic vehicles on the market as I havent really cared about Fords until my car became available.

I've been a Ford tech for 23 years, im not impressed at all with the 5.4 3v, we have been having alot of problems with them. The 4.6 is decent, it just wont get out of its own way. Get the GM or Dodge.

It's always funny to hear techs say this, but it's been true for every dealership I've worked at......the techs usually end up hating most of the vehicles sold there because that's all they ever see is those cars with problems......when I worked at the Chevy dealer, numerous guys who considered themselves "die-hard" Chevy guys ended up hating Chevy trucks because that was all they saw...day in, day out, Chevys with problems.....

the 5.4 3v is a horrible engine to work on. I prayed everytime I changed plugs...

Anyways, I got my small chevy pick up (09 colorado 5.3L) and it does what I need it to do. How much does he tow? I do prefer the chevy's but I am a bit biased in my opinions. Though I do drive ford super duty's, 2500HD's, 3500's etc etc at work all day. By far the best ride In the mine is the chevy's. The fords are all way to stiff of a ride to get comfortable and you feel three inches shorter after the drive. The dodges I drove I do like the layout of the interiors and the power is there but it also likes the gas. I'd say the silverado (sierra for GMC) or the ram. Depending on how much he needs to tow.
