How many new cars these days have a SRA? Now if Ford really wanted to be in class of one, they could offer a "drag pack" option on the next gen car with a SRA. Then everyone would be satisfied. I doubt it will happen, but it's not that far of stretch.

I would note that I noticed very little difference on "rough roads" between my 5 link IRS Challenger and the SRA 5.0 Mustang. The only, ONLY difference to me was the Mustangs rear end was a bit twitchy in high speed switch-backs

Same here with my LS. One look at the new Camaro and any interest I might have had with the v6 Stang was subdued.

Good thread...

Being a girl driver and my new car was to be a daily driver, not one that I take to the track every weekend or a Garage Queen - my needs were different.

Before placing my order (May, 09) I drove a Mustang, a Challenger and sat in a Camaro (as they didn't have one available to drive). I'm tall (6'1") with long legs (36" inseam) so I was interested in comfort. My children are no longer little, so I have no need for a back seat/car seats, etc.

The Challenger was the most comfortable to sit in, but the Camaro was as comfortable but provided a better ride. The Mustang was stiff and took the bumps harder and the cabin seemed small to me.

Economy wasn't that important as I only have a 35 mile commute daily. So I definitely wanted a V8 Manual. Even though both the Challenger and the Camaro were being termed as "heavy, and boat-like" they were my top two choices. Both were head turners - with the Camaro getting the "longer look".

Then came the decision-maker. The price tag: I got my 2SS/RS OTD for $36,300 and the SRT-8 was going to be nearly $50k which put it out of my price range.

Have not been disappointed in the least with my Camaro. And I am proud to own a GM for the first time in over a decade. My two cents. Lori

I would suggest that the general car buying public - including those that would be at least interested in the Mustang or Camaro - doesn't know the difference between an IRS and an SRA (unless the salesman tells them) and probably wouldn't notice the ride difference in the vast majority of environments.

However, the more hardcore types among us do indeed know, and will tend to gravitate towards what suits our needs. This means drag racers typically head towards the live axle cars (not sure what happened to nhra stocker ), and the road race types will head towards the IRS choices.

Autocross.....make it light I guess! LOL.

Late Fox Body/3rd gen era (mainly late 80s early 90s times). You could get a 5.0 LX for not much over 10k (GT about 14k) but the IROC/Z28 Camaros (depending on years) started in the very high teens and over 20k.

This is true but you could pick up a Camaro RS for about the same price as a Mustang GT or 5.0 LX. Those poor 3rd Gen Camaro guys had to decide if they REALLY wanted to be able to beat the 5.0 Mustang LOL.

when my dad took me to buy my first car I test drove the challenger and the camaro. Im a tall guy Im only 16 but Im 6'0". So I wanted a car with lots of leg room so Id be comfortable while driving. and Im a teen so w/e car I got was gonna be my DD. The challenger was very roomy but I didn't like the way it handled. The mustang was very small but I have to admit it was a nice ride with the exception of its hard braking. The camaro was very roomy and made for a nice ride and at first the blind spot turned me off but with a little adjusting of my rear view mirrors the blind spot issue was taken care of. Which is why I picked the camaro. But the mustang made for a very nice ride and I will admit if it wasn't for the size and the hard braking I might've actually gotten the mustang.

True, but the RS wasn't near the 5.0 in straight line performance. Speaking of the 91-92 models you could get a 3.1 V6 or TBI 5.0, 120 or 170 HP resectively I believe. Poor thing didn't have a prayer against the 5.0s LOL.

I agree for the most part. Ford did an exceptional job on the Mustang's SRA. However, if they did an equally good job on a IRS, it would be even better. I have a slight bias towards road racing, though going fast in a straight line is fun too.

I guess we'll just have to see what the future brings.

you can road race a solid axle as well. Especially since road race courses have smooth pavement

Some guy's with opposing technologies will have a tendency to trash each others technologies.
Examples: SRA vs IRS
DOHC vs push rod engines
coil overs vs leaf springs
mid-engine vs rear-engine
These battles rage on in discussions and forums world wide. All of these technologies are still relevant their current state. The Mustang has evolved the SRA to a point where it is a non-issue, the LS series engines can hold their own with anything out there, Corvettes with leaf springs can corner with the best of them and rear engine Porsches have proven themselves on countless occasions. Just because a technology is older does not mean that it has not evolved and remained relevant.

True statement. Pretty crazing how fast the 2011 Shelby can get around a race track. Ford is putting some serious effort in to handling and braking. (FINALLY!!!)
