Can you build a laptop from scratch like you can a desktop? I know my dad has built his last 2 desktops.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and has been great for 2 1/2 years so far. It only crashed once over the summer because I installed steam to play counterstrike. My mom has a Dell desktop for about 6 years and is now about as slow as molasses but is still running.

yes you can. www.newegg.com is a good place to buy parts, however you need to make sure that you get matching components (ie, graphics card doesnt mate up with the mother board, etc) a lot of companies have been adding the option online to custom build your own pc/laptop, but its usually overall more expensive and less powerful than a full custom build from a dedicated site.

you can check out

www.ibuypower.com
or
www.buyxg.com and custom build your own laptop/desktop

I figured there would be some trick to it since there are multiple sizes and configurations. Thanks for the links.

why would i want to spend 1,100 for a build it yourself laptop over the laptop for $800 that I posted from HP? What is the difference?

because your $800 laptop is a bare bones model without a warranty.

if you look on that same link you posted, they have the "recommended configuration" that still doesnt come with a warranty standard.

in the pm I sent you earlier I went thru and downgraded a quick build and had to upgrade parts of the HP build to get them on equal footing and the quick build came out $500 cheaper than the HP. (all things being equal).

you can buy the HP for all I care, but keep in mind you are skimping on price by purchasing lower quality/capability with no warranty. you could add a warranty, but then that would bring the price to match a quick build from one of the sites I listed. I just dont want you to buy something then get completely fed up with it 2 months down the road and realize that if you had upgraded a little bit earlier on, you wouldnt have to be paying for it down the road (both figuratively and literally)

jmo.

Replying from my XPS M1530. Don't forget to order a 7200 RPM hard drive

PS - If your into high-end audio - the SoundBlaster X-Fi Notebook card is, well, REALLY good sounding. Best sound I've ever heard out of a notebook. For Reelz.

Hrm...I thought it was with warranty. I'll have to look into that again.

I didn't want to spend that much on a laptop and really just wanted something to mess around on. Honestly, I don't know that much about laptops in general, how they are put together, etc and was just curious. I was under the impression that the HP on teh site was a pretty good quality that ran pretty fast and also came with the warranty.

EDIT:

they have the 1 year hardware warranty, but that doesnt cover drop/damage. all it covers is if there is a problem with the hardware itself. if you drop the thing and bust the screen, that might not be covered

http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/...ebook_Tips.pdf

but yeah, the one they have is nice, the only thing i would do is bump up the processor to a lil higher speed one. and thats one thing too, for the price its a good laptop. and for what you will be using it for, it will do all that and more.

I just got my new desktop in this morning.

AMD 9500 quadcore processor
64 bit Vista OS
640Gb HD
6Gb ddr3 memory
and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 graphics card.

plus a few other little things here and there.

and my 27" lcd monitor.

its a nic-a

Very nice setup spike. My question though is that with all the other top end components what kept you from picking up a 9850 or 9950 BE? especially with all the deals they have been having on them lately at newegg.

When you read posts does it look like you're watching a tennis match?

No Panasonic fans here? I'm ashamed of you boys.
