A Volt is not worth 61k. Just because the zr1 was gouged doesn't mean you need to gouge the Volt. That's twice the price of a Leaf.

GM shouldn't ship their cars to dealers who intend to gouge like that. Does GM even want to sell these things or no?

Any limited-production vehicle will be gouged by less-than-honest dealers. See: SRT8..........

GM can't tell the dealers how to operate their businesses. And they can't allocate based on favoritism like that, either. It's part of the franchise laws so many states decided to pass...

Well that sucks. Maybe they'll have to conduct their interviews better when a franchisee comes to open/buy a dealership, or add a clause in their franchise agreement about markups. Or just cut the dealer loose when they don't sell those Volts...

Some dealers gouged on the Camaro too. And I bet nearly each and every one of them was bought at whatever crazy price the dealer asked for. Plus a bunch were flipped by people who bought them at MSRP, then the new owner tacked on an extra $10k and sold it used for more than MSRP. And people knew that the Camaro would be a high volume car. There are only 10k 2011 Volts scheduled. I hate the practice, but it can't be helped until people stop paying way to much for in demand cars.

The other thing is, I usually associate gouging with performance cars, since they are usually the low-production high demand ones. I can't imagine why anyone would pay 20k over for the Volt. If they do, then

Even at its 41k price point, isn't GM loosing money on each one sold?

If that is the case why would they want to try to build 100,00 units a year. Not to menchon the price of gas is not that high right now, but once it goes back to $4.50 a gallon again there will be more demand for it IMO.

They'd pay it for the same reason anyone else would pay extra for an in demand car: because they want it NOW!

The longer it's on the market, and the more competition that arises, the cost of manufacturing will decrease. If demand keeps increasing, manufacturing costs keep decreasing, then profit margins will increase.
