******* The economy is bad enough, they are trying to take money from hard working Americans. The UAW factory workers make about 29 dollars an hour. The $70/hr they are talking about includes medical, retirement and other benefits the company pays for.The cars company signed a contract with the workers and they need to honor it. If they want to renegotiate with the Union on wages and benefits, they should wait until their contract expires 2011.Yes I am a proud union worker TWU Local 100 Transportation Workers. I do not work for a car company. I work for MTA NYC Transit, in track construction. Last edited by GTAHVIT; 12-12-2008 at 10:27 PM. Reason: Very strict policy against party politics. Thank you. |

What is with all the hate toward Unions. Do you think that any company would pay OT for work done after 40 hrs? Only after the labor laws were passed, hanks to the Union.
Do you think that companies would give you vacation and sick pay, oh yeah thank the Unions for that one too. Weekends, yep Unions help create that to. Dont for an istant ever believe that the protections the work force have today would be here if it wasn't for the Unions. The people that talk about how overpaid the auto workers are need to wise up. Every job can be done cheaper by somebody else. How soon before its your job? How in the hell can anybody in this country bitch about how much a plant worker makes when CEO rake in millions in salaries and bonuses, sports players make millions to FRICKIN play, movie stars and musicians make millions to act and sing, and our great politicians make assinine salaries that they themselves decide on. You want to complain about somebody making too much money and bankrupting a industry go ahead its your right. But try putting yourself in those line workers shoes and see if you want to take another cut in pay while the top tier suits lose nothing. |

It pains me to say this, but I'm again' ya on this one, fbodfather. There's no need to worry about selling our cars to other countries until we can first sell them in this country. We need to get our own American workers to quit penalizing the auto industry before we complain about foreign governments doing the same. We need to get our own house in order first.
True, unions have given us many bona fide, well deserved benefits in the past, but they've now grown to the point of overstepping their bounds.

unions have outlived their usefulness. My wife is a teacher and is a member of the union. Oh, they have just had to re-negotiate their contract and reduce their wages. They did this without saying..."wait until the current contract expires" .
That is asinine. The rest of us don't make $29.00/hour unless we have medical, pension, etc. taken out of that. Not starting with $70.00 and ending up with a NET $29.00 WTF!

The UAW's didn't go from pennies to riches. When the job was harder and more dangerous they had reasons to be paid more. Then as tech improved and safety improved things got easier but the pay steadily went up over the years just like inflation. It was not a big deal to the BIG 3 because they were making money and plenty of it. Now that the money is drying up, the calss for pay cuts appear. Well what about the suits. Nobody has demanded them to reduce their salaries. Except the 3 top CEO's were asked "if" they would work for a $1. But we all know that they would receive their money someway under the table. By the way. Does anybdy kow how much a petro chemical plant worker makes for sitting in a room infront of a computer pushing buttons while stuff is beng made. I do and it puts the auto workers to shame. Wonder if they will be asked to reduce their pay because gas is under $2 a gallon.... Dont even believ it for a minute.

I can't fathom why people are so quick to jump on and attack a segment of our population that is key to maintaining a healthy middle class. Senators like Shelby and Graham should be called out for what they are...upatriotic and anti-american. The people that they're trying to beat into submission are middle class families trying to pay mortgages and send their children to college so they don't have to do the manual labor which so many people here think a monkey could do. All the while they will do everything they can to support those who have turned American on its ear and caused the situation in we're in to begin with. Open up your eyes people!

Oh those republicans Senators are doing a fine spin job and y'all are buying it
Look, the 70 dollar an hour includes payments to those who are retired and their insurance. CNN showed almost all who shot it down due to the UAW are from the South East and have Japanese transplants in their states. And were only talking a few hundred dollars labor per vehicle anyway. It wouldn't make a difference. Fooking Mitch McConnel takes money from Toyota , it was in the Louisville paper. The republicans are pissed that the UAW gives to mostly Democrats and are getting them back, screw the economy and the rest of the country . Oh BTW Mitch, there are two Ford plants and the Corvette plant here in KY besides the Toyota plant so get your head out of their azz and support KY workers. I'd guessing it would be a good chance that anything the UAW gives up, Toyota workers will be too.
