Leaf also doesn't have a thermal management system for the battery pack like the Volt does. If it's too hot or too cold, you aren't going anywhere in your Leaf.

I know GM will be losing money on each Volt even w/ the big price tag. The R&D that went into the car was costly.. I hope that the platform does well, but not for me at this time.. The Cruz or VW TDI might be our next car in a few years or some type of EV if it's cost effective.. The bottom line all boils down to cost.. I can buy a ton of fuel at $4 per gal, like 8-9 years worth w/ the money saved over the Volt or Leaf when compared to the Cruz..
Yea, the VW TDIs are the best out there. They aren't fugly like the Insight and Prius, they are fun to drive, and they have good build quality, with all the same efficiency. And I'm not just saying that because I drive a GTI

Where do you get that you travel for free with a Leaf? Dosen't electricity cost money to charge the thing?

Where will you find a place to charge it if you happen to get 50 miles from home? (That is the upper range you can go, average driving will be much less I am sure) at least the Volt will still get you home, you don't have to keep a close watch on how far you have driven to make sure you can make it back.. seems like something else to stress over when driving...If you get caught up in traffic and need to use the heater or AC that will lower your range too.. The Leaf has alot more problems than you realize for most people to use it.. another thing is that has to be the stupidest name for a car ever...Leaf?

Because a decent amount of wind will blow it away?

Do you drive 100 miles a day back and forth from work?
Obviously the Leaf is not meant for people going on roadtrips, it's meant as a commuter car. And 99% of Americans don't drive 50 miles just to get to work.
If you don't understand the purpose of this car, then there's no point in arguing about it with you

The vast majority of people drive less than 40 miles a day, which is why GM picked 40 miles for the Volts range.

I do, roughly 50 miles each way, just thought I'd throw that out there LOL.

Yea. But I think Nissan extended the range just in case real world commuter driving hits you with traffic, and you want the ac on and the music blasting and the windows open, etc, and you will get all that definitely with the Leaf. You might be pushing it with the Volt, in which case you might end up using gas for part of the end

Then you don't understand the purpose of the Volt, it is supposed to be BOTH a commuter car and a everyday car that can be used just as any other car can, You don't need to have 2 cars if you don't want to,..With the Leaf you have to either have a second vehicle for trips or rent a car every time you want to go more than 50 miles from home....P.S. I am retired so I don't drive to work any more... but when I did it was easily 50 mileas a day in traffic... so in essence with the leaf you have a one purpose vehicle for 32,000 dollars, with the Volt you get two cars in one. for 41,000 dollars..

Yes, but you are in the minority. You might have to look into a TDI or charging the Leaf while you're at work lol

Just to throw another wrench in, what about cars like the Fiesta? You can get a fiest with ambient lighting, SYNC, navigation, etc for less than 20k and get 40 MPG highway. Should be able to do similar with the cruze (add maybe a couple grand).

Not that I have any actual evidence to back this up with, but I'm willing to say the vast majority of households have at least two cars anyways; One for each partner, or sometimes one partner likes to drive multiple cars. In which case it wouldn't matter whether the Leaf can do-it-all, because chances are that they have another car.

I'd get a TDI or Fiesta I think, both provide great mileage, fun to drive, and with the prices you would have to drive the Volt a long time to make up the difference. Neat idea, good start, just not there yet. But I guess everyone has to start somewhere.
