There is a reason Texas cities have lower crime rates than places like Chicago, Detroit, Newark, and DC. We are allowed to arm ourselves and use force to defend our property, while they are not. And the criminals know it.

Personally, I wouldn't shoot anyone for vandalism. Still, every time I read one of your posts, it makes me want to move to Texas. Knowing I had the right to defend my property with any means necessary would make it easier to sleep at night.

Break into my home and threaten me and/or my family and I will shoot you dead in a New York second. Vandalize my car, outside in the garage I may fire a shot into the air but wouldn't kill someone, don't think I could live with myself. My car is replaceable, my family is not.. IMHO

I agree that killing the kid is too much.

I'd stop at tazing him and beating the living death out of him, just so that he'll stay alive. That way it has a point. He'll learn and won't do it again unless he's a masochist...

vandalize a car now, rob a store or bank later, car jack, home invasion, rape. He won't be doing any of these things now... No sympathy here!

If you don't want to be shot. Don't commit crimes... Period!

And he was old enough to know better. He wasn't a 10 year old kid.

At 17 years old this guy knows better. 13 years olds do silly things for kicks. This kid is 6 months away from being in a nuclear submarine (argument for another day).

I fully agree that killing him was too far. I wouldn't have done it. Shooting him in the kneecap though will have you up paying medical bills for the rest of their life. And we know what that costs!

I feel that you give up your basic human rights the second you create malicious intent for another person. My personal values are set at STEALING my car or from my home. Anything else and I would never physically harm someone. Now, if a person breaks into my house (even without a gun), I'm giving them a 3rd eyeball. Period.

okay first lol@ shooting in the air or shooting someones knees, with respect maybe who says that should look into a firearms class mmkay?

Second with all who say killing is going to far, do you know ALL the facts? How do you know the little 'innocent' vandal wasn't threatening the shooter? Doesn't say much of anything about the actual situation in the article. What if the shooter confronted the vandal, then the little punk went for something in his pocket or started moving towards the guy?

I find this an interesting commentary. I find it interesting the statements that "well the person was only vandalizing stuff, why did they get shot and killed?" While I do agree that shooting the kid may have been a bit excessive I do believe the age old adage of "dont kick a tiger in the ass and you wont get bit" holds true.

Living in Texas and avoiding tiger asses.

Good point, but it doesn't explain why New York City, which I think has the MOST restrictive gun laws in the country (no carry, let alone CCW), is the safest big city in America...

The kid didn't deserve to die but I wouldn't ever vandalize another person's property, period. Slashing tires? I expect an angry ex-girlfriend to do that kind of stuff.

I can see shooting the punk in his leg for what he did but the head shot is a bit excessive.
