How to determine displacement
I know what a 6.2L engine means in relation to a 2.4L engine, as I'm sure we all do - But I didn't realise how Manufacturers came up with these numbers.
I'll be honest, up untill about a year or so ago, I thought that they dipped engines into a Huge Vat of water, to see how much liquid it displaced... ![]() So I'm posting this for those of us who didn't really know what these numbers meant; Displacement, is essencially (the volume of the cyllinders at bottom dead-center stroke) X (the number of cyllinders). LS2: it's bore(width) of the cyllinders = 4 in. it's stroke (hieght) of the cyllinder = 3.62 in So, the volume of each cyllinder = [pi * (r)^2] * Hieght. [3.141592 * (2)^2] * 3.62 ~45.5 cubic inches...multiply that by 8 cyllinders ~364 cubic inch engine. (or 6 liters) I was actually surprised to find that the engine's physical size is relative to the cyllinder size, not the other way around. That was my lesson for the day.NOTE: I aplogise to those who already knew this. I didn't so I assume others may not have either.

Thanks
that was beautiful...![]() I'm that kind of person who wants to know everything - just for the sake of knowing it. So if I don't know something - I can admit that, in the hopes someone will educate me about it. |

Just so Dragon knows he's not the least knowledgeable...
I had no idea either what it meant. I'm sure Dragon knows a LOT more than I do... (I'm not one to poke around under the hood of my car, so never really bothered to learn. When I need work that's what the dealership/mechanic is for.) As long as it works like it's supposed to, and I can put it in D and go I'm happy. |

I was brought up in a car family. My mom sold Jerry Rice and Joe Montana their 4runners when they were sponsered by Toyota back in the early 90's and my father owned a private party car lot. I know more than I'd care to know, but it comes in handy. I remember learning about this in middle school because I had just learned about displacement in science class and came home talking about boats in lochs and whatnot. My dad said it's the same with cars and explained it. Good memories. =)

to go from Cubic Inches to Liters...
All you have to do is take the Cubic Inches and divide by 61 to get Liters, or reverse, take the liters and multiply by 61 to get Cubi Inches. Should work every time.
